HI, I have a Tascam US122 audio/midi interface and the inputs are not regestering any sound. By a process of elimination I have found that the input are dead so how can I repair them, is it a case of just replacing some capacitors?

May 29, 2009 11:33 am You'd have to be sure the caps are bad, which they may be, or not. It could be solder joints or a resistor is dead. There's probably ICs in there as well that may be bad.
I'd question if it was worth the hassle, to try and diagnose it down to that level. You may spend more time in troubleshooting than a replacement may cost.

May 29, 2009 09:35 pm Indeed, I would ask how old it is as well?
And no, it isn't just a matter of replacing capacitor's in that. It is mostly IC chip's and a few small bits of odds and ends.
Most are too small to be replaced with common home soldering tools. Most of those small little low priced units are using one very small circuit card with IC chips and a couple of pots.
You may get lucky and find it is a worn out connection jack or wire going to one. I would look at that first off.

May 30, 2009 01:01 am ya, my best hopes for it are that its just a loose connection to the inputs
but sadly it looks as if it will be mroe than that, but, now that im home, im tired haha, so i knwo i said i'd bust mine open, but i will tomorrow, got lots of free time, and i like opening stuff up

May 30, 2009 10:34 am wow, in canada the unit goes for between 120 and 160,
so 60 pounds is bascially a new unit, if not only 40$ shy of a new one, i hate when businesses do that,
so will they tell you whats wrong for free?
sometimes you can find a neat little shop, that will give you a free estimate on how much and what is wrong, so you can just go fix it yourself, try looking into that
May 30, 2009 11:53 am I owned a US-122. It now belongs to one of the members here.
I do electronic repairs. And have opened up my US-122, to look and see what IC they where using for the Opamp.
Unless you are an experienced repair tech, do not attempt to do the repair your self.
All of the components are surface mount. You need special tools to work on this type of equipment. And a rework station can cost a few thousand dollars. Depending on the type.
Now, how are you sure that the inputs are dead? There is one common voltage rail for the Opamps. And it powers the rest of the unit as well.
What steps did you take to arrive to the conclusion of the dead inputs?
