In the $2k range with at least SPDIF out.. and at least two inputs.

Any ideas? :)

This would be for mainly vocals if not exclusively..

You need a preamp with built-in converters...?

You could do worse than MOTU (the Traveler is a personal favorite) or RME.

That all said - You could pick up a FMR RNP, a Lavry Black AD *and* a SM7b and have one of the best possible vocal chains available for under $2k all together.

Well I was looking for built in for ease of use...

Anyway... I already have a Neumann TLM-193 so I wont need the SM7b... but I AM looking at the FMR RNP now... :)

I guess I can budge a little bit and spend up to $2500... bumping up the preamp budget to about $1100 then.

Thank you!

All the more reason for the 7b. A far superior vocal mic IMO/E (which is considerable between the two). Not that the 193 doesn't come in handy here and there - but for flattering the human voice, few mics can touch the 7b -- I even keep one here. Granted - this is a mastering facility and mics aren't used much. And I also have FrankeNuemann (it's custom, it's amazing, but it's not much of a "typical use" vocal mic - picks up exactly what's in front of it).

Granted - No one mic is best for all vocals (but it's hard to make a 7b sound like it wasn't meant to be there - freakishly flexible).

Back to preamps - If you want to kick it up a notch, a pair of True P-Solos -- Or a P-Solo and a Grace m101... Both freakishly impressive for the $$$ - As is the RNP. The RNP wins (obviously) if you need a matched pair - But you could also go with the RNP and a P-Solo... No one preamp is "the best" all the time either - except for the Flamingo :-) But the RNP is cheap as hell and nothing to sneeze at. The P-Solo is a (small) step up from that IMO.

I tune down down...

RNP gets my vote. It's just a fantastic Pre.

hey Cynic! how the **** are ya? long time no see, where you been hidin?

I bought a "Joemeek Twin Q". im as happy as a pig in you know what, now i bought it, i only just figured out a few things about it too which makes it even better.

seems you want something a bit better though spending that sorta coin, the joemeek is pretty cheap o'er there.
still, its good.

I'll say the P-Solo is great as well as the RNP. TRUE Systems have a few models out there you can check out (Nuemann endorses them...) . most pre's that i would suggest don't have a SPDIF and some of the ones that do the A/D converters arn't the best. Might look into a MOTU or RME along side a good solid state pre .
