Line In vs Mic In

As I've posted in other threads, I bought an AudioTrak Maya1010 for 8-in simultaneous instrument recording. The funny thing is... I never pay'd any attention to the fact that 6 of the 8 inputs are analog "line in" inputs and not "mic in" inputs.

When recording my drums, I send the toms/bass/snare mics to the 6 analog inputs and the two overhead condenser mics (which require 12v Phantom) into the two remaining "mic in" inputs. Is this bad practice? I mean, I get sound and plenty of headroom to tweak the db output. Will continuing to do this either damage the mics or the breakout box? Or, if I'm happy with the results, then keep on?

Web forums seem to imply that the line-in inputs are designed for devices that have their own pre-amp (makes sense).... so essentially there's no pre-amp available for the drum mics; just the two condenser mic-in inputs. Do I care if I'm getting what I want recorded?

Thanks

If using the XLR to line cables I believe that is a correct way to do things. I'm not sure if it is the ideal way but if it accomplishes the task and you are happy that's all that matters.
