I have been reading some of the posts on the board and you guys seem to really know what you are talking about,so please be patient with me because I really don't know much. I have a Tascam US1641 interface and I would like to find a really good EQ, at a low price that, I can connect to it for recording and also be able to use for live shows. The type of music is mostly bluegrass, Christian, and country. My microphones are an Audio-Technica AT4040, AT2020, AT2021,ATR30, a Shure 12a, 33-984D(SM58 clone), a Sennheiser E824s, and a Peavey PVi 100, I have a Yamaha EMX 312sc powered mixer and a set of Nady Audio PS112 speakers.

May 14, 2009 01:51 pm When capturing seperate channels, if possible I would probably leave most EQ out of the recording. You can remove problems later but can't bring back things removed on tracking.
Now, if you are only capturing a stereo track of the entire gig then the best mix possible on output is key.
For the live show you probably want at least a 31 band eq.
I will let the live guys respond in regards to a good product.
May 14, 2009 02:05 pm Thanks for the info, One of my problems , I think is, I am using the EQ that came with the Cubase LE software,it only has 4 channels. Do you think I need an EQ plug-in and if so which one?

May 14, 2009 03:50 pm The 31 band is pretty much for the live end of it.
A 4 channel paraEQ is pretty powerfull as far as tweaking already recorded tracks.

May 14, 2009 04:59 pm Just to add a bit to Cpt's first post. Instead EQ'ing while tracking try to utilize mic choice and positioning instead. You should only need to adjust EQ slightly afterwards if you have tracked well.

May 14, 2009 05:35 pm yup, for recording, an EQ is not really a worth while investment right off the bat, its something you can get later down the line if it really calls to you.
and a 31-band and parametric EQ will serve you a lifetime if a good brand in live sound. and can fight you out of any odd issues you can come across, in a club or under 1000 person venue.
but i record on an SSL into protools, and never use an EQ, nor is there an EQ strip on the console, anything that may need to be changed frequency wise, there are a million pieces of software to bail you out, and if you MUST have a piece of hardware, a parametric can help in studio setting. and if you use the Para, defiantly use it as a channel insert.

May 15, 2009 09:52 pm Yep, record flat without tweaking the EQ. There are very rare instance when and EQ is welcome on the input. Mostly for a specific effect or tone you are looking for would be the only time to use it.
Mic choice and position as BH stated are the key.
