Hi,
I've been a guitar player for a number of years and recorded demos also for a fair while - I joined this site because I want to learn a little more on the recording technique - if any of you have a few minutes up your sleeve, could you please listen to the recordings on my myspace page (see homepage link)and let me know what you like / don't like about the recordings. I don't expect you to like the taste in music - just interested the 'how it sounds'.

Thanks a lot
- Tim

Hey Tim,

Have not had much time lately and I cannot access myspace at work, I will try to take a listen tonight though.

In the meantime, check out some other songs while you wait for comments. You don't have to be a master engineer to offer advice/criticism and everyone here appreciates both :)

Hi Tim, I'm listening to your tunes now. First one I heard was Little One. First off, great playing and I like the song. You have some noise in your chain. What are you using in your chain? I would try and deal with that first.
I will make more comments when I have more time.
Cheers!

Thanks for your responses - The tunes on that page fall into two categories:

(1)songs recorded through an amp (with a basic dynamic mic)into a pentium three using cakewalk six in a spider and cockroach ridden back shed. These are the songs with some 'hisssssssssss'

(2)After watching me struggle, a very kind friend of mine bought me a Line 6 guitar port soundcard (with gearbox software)- which sounds a lot better, recording wise. I still use Cakewalk 6, though old, does what I want it to. I then transfer it to Audacity to touch it up and export as Mp3's. Oh, and I've upgraded to a pentium 4.

I'm looking forward to listening to some of the material here too.

Thanks for taking the time.

Tim

In my opinion you shouldn't worry what software you use for recording, I use REAPER now, used to use CEP2. Can't really tell the difference as a user. Both do what they say on the tin. If it works. Keep it.

I also use a UX2 TonePort and think its the Dogs Bollocks. The drums I process myself, I've no idea about things like Cakewalk etc. In fact if someone wants to explain to me what it is I'd appreciate it.

Wow, I listened to quite a few of them and they are very atmospheric. Nice guitar work that definitely deviates from the norm. Bravo!

CptTripps, thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to listen, I really appreciate it!

I'm on a budget as far as equipment goes, so I'm interested in how to use what little I have in the best way....and JDOD, my old software "does what it says on the tin", though I've experimented with other software, it works for me at this level, so I'm happy.

Rainy Day, I really like the surf guitar tone and the reverb drenched sound. But the drum and bass are being drowned out a bit by the level of the guitars on that one. I liked the tune on the whole though for sure.

Little One, I can hear the noise as well. Mild but there, more like a 50 or 60 cycle hum I guess so that could be attributed to the electrical in the area you were playing that caused the noise in the signal chain. but I really liked the mix of that one, all clear and clean. Very nicely done on that one for sure.

Heatwave as well, liked that one as well. You do like that reverb drenched surf sound though! I do as well.

Car n Coffee. The drums kind of had mixed levels there on that one. Out front at times and a bit hidden behind the rest at times. Its cool to hear you use some modern synth tones in these as well.

I could see any of these in an old school surf film or even in today's modern surf films. Definitely have a very sound track feel to them all.

Noize2u,

Thanks also very much for listening and giving some objective feedback. It's been really interesting to get the feedback.

On the songs that you picked - if you are interested (I'm going to tell you anyway):

Rain Day - I used a digital delay from the 1980's for the reverb (Alesis Midiverb)and the drum loop came from a cakewalk demo - which I used sparingly - as you noticed.

Little One - was a back shed mic to amp recording. You are right about the hum - it came through my pickups from my computer or monitor and at the time I didn't know I was going to put it on the net :|

Heatwave - first song using Line 6 guitar port - recorded at my parents dining room table, surrounded by cables...in the heat...

Car n Coffee - experimenting with a sampling program called "TU2" by Brambos (a freeware version here: www.brambos.com/tu2.html )

I built the drum patterns from scratch but may have lost it in the mix.

Sorry for rambling since I'm new here - but seeing you went to the effort to listen, I thought you may be interested.

I appreciate the objective feedback - which will help in any further tunes I hope.

Thanks - I'll keep an eye on these forums for more info.

Gave a listen to several of the songs you have posted, nice work. Brings back memories of the Ventures, cool sound.

I'm with ya on that OD for sure. Memories, and good ones at that.

eastperson, That's what its all about here. sharing the opinion's and such. And you feeding back on the feedback is all part of it. I wish more would do that. It helps to understand were you are at with your process and when we hear something that can be pointed out by you or anyone else who may record something. Then it all makes it come together to find a cure if it is needed or simply a tweak if that is needed.

On the recordings themselves. Well I find something good in almost anything I listen too, even country music. :-)

And very cool on the MidiVerb as well. I owned one up until about a year ago. bought it brand new and got more then enough use out of it. Still keep a Quadreverb II in the rack though.

Anyway, really like those tune for sure and will probly listen to them again as well. I'll send and invite on myspace when I get a little time. My page is pretty much strictly musicians and music biz folks. All different kinds.

I've had a - quick - look at your sites also, but will come back for a proper look and listen as the weeks go by.

Well, thanks again; particularly for your feedback and kind welcome. I'll be keeping an eye on the forums.
