E-MU 0404 USB Problems Recording

I'm currently using a E-MU 0404 to record in Reaper. My laptop is a Acer Extensa 5620 , 2x1.8ghz processors, 3gb of ram, running windows vista. Previously a friend and I were using a lexicon omega to record and all seemed fine. We tend to use alot of vsts, guitar impulses etc. We were using like 10 tracks full of vsts, consisting mostly of sonic maximizers, amplitube 2, and I admit some times it started to crawl. But now that Im using the 0404, I cant even get 2 tracks to function at the same time without pops and clicks. I've tried using the latest 0404 asio driver, as well as asio4all. Basically im trying to use two tracks at the same time to make one big fat tone, combining off axis and on axis guitar tones through their individual channels. My fx chain looks like this

voxengo boogex (special emg81 emulator ) > amplitube 2 > voxengo boogex ( actual impulse ) > sonic maximizer

I'm using this on 2 channels each panned about 75%, and it will not work for the life of me. Static, pops, the whole shebang. I'm losing my mind. I've tried eliminating the maximizer, and it did nothing. I'm just so confused considering with the lexicon we had like 10 of these tracks.

Set the audio buffer in the Emu control panel up to 512 or so and that should help out.

How do I go about doing that? Im relatively new to using this unit. There is the E-mu control panel, but it doesnt have anything i can see about buffer size.

How about something like a Latency slider or anything to do with Latency settings?
There has to be a setting maybe in the ASIO tab or something to allow changing the buffer setting.

All interfaces have this type of setting as it is needed to set it for the difference while recording or simple playback.

I think i can change the setting in reaper. Whats a good buffer size, i changed it from 1200 to 2400, but i wont know until tomorrow, with my girlfriend sleeping in the same room, its nearly impossible to not get myself killed testing out the new buffer size, lol.

Are you using the ASIO drivers or something else? It almost sounds like you have it on the default drivers which are usually MME and are not worth a darn.

You shoujld be able to switch to the ASIO drivers or at very least WDM and get much better performance.

im using the updated asio driver that came with the e-mu0404, i tried asio4all and it wasnt as good. in reaper i changed the buffer to 4500ms and it helps a bit, for awhile. when i go higher it actually causes more problems.

OK, if you have a WDM driver available give that a try and see what happens. I'm wondering if it is bad driver code. This just shouldn't happen with two simple tracks. Unless there is something running in the background in Windows that is sucking the life out of the system resources.
