does anyone know any free software that will help me position my speakers
RoomEqWizard isn't too bad - Although you'll obviously need (A) a measurement microphone (B) a reference preamp and (C) the know-how and experience in how to read the charts and apply the changes to the room.
The almost "universal" (if there really were such a thing) starting points on room setup are here: www.massivemastering.com/...Room_Setup.html
Unless there's an appreciable amount of broadband trapping already set up in the room, it's not even worth shooting it at this point. Trap it first - Tweak it later.

or tell me if my room is bad etc etc??
If there's *not* an appreciable amount of broadband trapping and your room is of typical construction and rectangular in shape, I can save you a lot of time - Your room is bad, etc., etc. Shooting an untreated room tells you how bad your room is. It really won't help much until it's at least "sort of" controlled.
