What Monitor Speakers should I get?

Hey everyone

I've just purchased a lexicon omega with Cubase Le4. I'm going to be recording acoustic guitar tracks with a good Yamaha apx electro/acoustic and an SM58.

I want to get a decent pair of speakers for playback, but don't want to break the bank. Someone has recommended Genelec, but from what I have seen online they're out of my price-range.

I'm looking at spending between £100-£150 and was just looking for a bit of advice.

Thanks

oh yeah, and I have a custom-built PC which has been designed to use for video editing etc so don't know if this will make a difference at all?

Can't go wrong with a pair of M-Audio BX5A/ BX5A Deluxe monitors from eBay. They are a relatively safe pick. The "Deluxe" series are a redesign using JBL technologies and can push more watts, but may not be required for your setup (more expensive). Typically, these sell for well over $400 new. But you can find "like new" on eBay for $200. Other suggested manufacturers include ESI and Yamaha.

I just bought a piar of the M-audio BX5A's from Guitar Center. The selling price was 299.99 for the pair . However, these speakers have a huge markup on them. I deal with the same person all the time at this store and they always hook me up. I got the pair for 115 plus tax "Brand new in the Box".

You have a lot of room to haggle on price. Dont pay too much.

Cheers guys. I've checked them out on the net, they seem exactly what I'm looking for.

I don't have a great amount of space, so noticed they have a smaller pair too, about 15w each. Do you think I should still stick with the BX5A's though??

get as much monitor as you can, you'll never say " these are too good, i wish they were crappier".

I agree..I wouldn't go any lower than the BX5A. They are pretty small, i think they're about 7" x 7"....not too big.

I like the sound of these better than the comparable models by Mackie or KRK Rockits....It really depends on what youre looking for. obviously the more you spend the better the quality...

I tune down down...

If you are looking to get "serious" in any bit, the BX5a's need a sub! That start to roll off at about 100hz or so. Add a BX10a sub and you're set!

If you don't want a sub, get the BX8a's. They are okay with out a sub.

Thanks for your help guys, just ordered a pair of BX5A's today! Cynic, I think I'll wait on the sub but will definitely consider it once I start getting more into the recording.

Many thanks everyone
