Can someone break down "dithering" in laymans terms?

And provide example(s) of when to apply/not apply it? I dont even know if "apply" is the right word. This one was not in the glossary either... Thanks.

The earlevel article is still kind of pertinent other then the fact that we do now have AD/DA converters that work at higher bit depths.

Yeah I noticed that article was from 1996. I hope he did too.

Still, as you said, it is pertinent and it's in the layman's terms he was after.

Oh ya, it still is current enough and the facts are still correct. I might have to copy that one so I have it next time that question is asked.
