Cool Edit Pro--Tracks randomly out of sync?? despair! :(

EDIT: Solved! I'm dumb. Was using "delay" by accident instead of "reverb". Oops!

I really hope someone can help me. :( I'm not experienced at recording, so stuff already sounds janky enough when things are going correctly. When something goes disastrously wrong...

I'm trying to overdub vocals into something. Seemingly at random, the vocal track will end up slightly "late". At first I thought it was me. My God, why am I singing so out of rhythm? But it's not me. I can't figure out why this is happening or how I'm making it happen.

I wish I could provide more information. :(

Well you can provide a bit more info that might help us get you going.

Specs of the PC, CPU speed, amount of Ram and the OS your running?

Also, what are you using to record with? An on board sound card, other audio interface? Let us know what.

I am guessing you are probably using and on board sound card. If that is the case, the fix wont' be real easy.

What you are experiencing is called latency. That is because the audio buffer that your sound card is using is either too high or the card simply cannot keep up with the requirement of the software. Which is usually the case in these situation's.

There are a couple of solution's, but a little more info will help first.

Oh ya, welcome to HRC by the way.

I had something similar like this; i turned down from 24 bit 192khz to just 16 bit 44 khz and it worked fine... but i am too green at recording stuff so you will get a better advice from someone here pretty soon ;)

Under tools -> options and I believe the multi-track tab is a checkbox to "auto correct drift in multi etc..". Make sure that is checked.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm embarrassed to reveal that the situation was entirely due to pilot error. In my haste and fury, when choosing effects for my vocal track, I was selecting "delay" rather than my usual reverb. Why? Who knows, but I did, and obviously, yes, it delayed the vocals.

If only all my problems were so simple. I also realized I've recorded my guitar quite too boomy. As in it kind of distorts. There's probably no way to fix this without re-recording, right? I think I'm just going to start the song from scratch.

Good way to learn, I guess, making mistakes. I'm seriously humbled. I can see why there are usually a lot of people working on an album. Recording Engineer is not one of my great skills!

Thanks again, guys. Sorry for being dim!

Nah, no problem. If I had a nickel for every dumb mistake I've made while trying to record at home, I could afford time in a real studio!

Hmmm, that gives me an idea for a new revenue stream. Who wants to start paying me for every mistake I make? Going once...going three times, er, twice...(see, there's one! cha-ching!).

Speaking of revenue streasms you know, if I had a bit of money, I would be more than happy to pay someone to be my recording engineer and general advice-giver. You know, just an "amateur" like one of us (although one much more skilled at sound than myself!).

But then again, if the budget was high enough for that, I'd buy a better bass guitar (Dad's Kingston fake Paul McCartney bass is struggling) and some drums (I'm tired of using kitchenware for percussion). :)

Whoo, and then I'd be on here going, "Oh Gad, someone, please, hth do I mic these drummmmzzzz plz???"

What I should really invest in, is someone to keep me sane during this little endeavor! (Bonus if they can drum well and massage! My back hurts!)

Indeed, its the simple mistakes that take the longest to figure out sometimes.

And yep, we've all been there.
