So me and my drummer were dinkin around with a punky\metalish\rockabilly? riff yesterday and got a basic structure down.
Some drifting on our performances but overall I think the idea is solid. Also, it's quite heavy which is nice as I've been pretty schmoopy lately.
Song is called Metabilly at the moment. "Composition" critique is welcome. We only have the main riff down so any ideas on how to flesh it out would be appreciated, maybe not used, but at least considered :)

Feb 27, 2009 01:17 pm Yee-haa! that's awesome. I'm gonna listen to that again when I'm on better speakers (laptop doesn't do it justice).
Now just need someone to punch out some lyrics (but not scream) and you're gold.

Feb 28, 2009 02:00 pm I don't know if I hear any rockabilly in it but it sure is an awesome riff. I definitley want to hear this finished. Killer!

Feb 28, 2009 07:22 pm **** yeah, that's kickn buttocks!
"composition critique"- at the bridge, chuck in some double kicks, either spurts or dynamicaly building up from spurts to straight doubles towards the end of bridge riff.
maybe, with the bass try find a double bass sample for the finger tapping noise, man that'll sound more rocka-billy.
and on the vox, definatley some insane screaming i agree. gotta be a good singer though.
keen as to hear the end product.
Feb 28, 2009 08:18 pm Tripps, all I could see in my head as I listened to this was
Not necessarily anything wrong with that.

Mar 01, 2009 01:51 pm Haha Herb, I can see that as a positive :)
Deon, I did mention your suggestion to the drummer and he was very open to it.
We are re-tracking it today and we'll see if it works out. Planning to lay a bass track and possibly a solo as well. Might even add an extension to the bridge just for the solo.
Hopefully I'll have an updated (in time) track posted tonight.

Mar 01, 2009 03:44 pm Just got to listen. I guess I can here a little of what might relate to the Rockabilly. Its more in the style of the riff and the punkish beat going on. I think Tripps might be relating it more to the high powered off shoot of Rockabilly like maybe Graceland Mafia or the like. Even some Rob Zombie stuff has a touch of that kind of thing going on.
I wanna hear the drums, especially the kick with a lot more punch in this though for sure.
I liked it myself and can see this be a real ripper in the end. I'm with Deon on the drum parts as well. I think it will add some interesting vibe to it.

Mar 02, 2009 12:18 pm Yeah, that's why I had a question mark. It reminds me of rockabilly in a way but does not sound like it.
First time I played the riff it was with a jazz drummer, his beat was very different and maybe that has something to do with it as well.
We ended up drinking and playing video games, maybe next time :)
