Am about to buy a new computer. I will be running Cubase, Kontakt, effects, synths and some minimal audio recording. Mainly will be using it to do orchestrations for my composing class. Which, means running quite a lot of VST instruments mainly through Kontakt. The OS of choice is probably windows XP.
As I am on a tight budget I was thinking of going for a fast Pentium Dual Core or equivalent AMD chip. But yesterday a friend of mine told me that I should get a Quad Core.
Now I am leaning towards the Quad Core. Any feedback on this matter?
Thanks guys for your feedback.

Feb 21, 2009 02:03 pm Noize tested some speeds with Q vs D, and ended up with a black edition AMD dual.
I've never had problems with my AMDs.

Feb 21, 2009 05:48 pm Nothing wrong with either one. Does your version of Qubase support multi core? If not, can get a little more Ghz out of a dual core for the $$$.
Honestly, either one is going to scream. The previous (and last) generation of processors are more than powerfull enough to do the job.

Feb 21, 2009 07:39 pm Hey Mauz, good to see ya.
But ya, both Tripps and pjk have it right.
I did run a benchmark on both Intel and AMD chips. It seems that AMD spends a lot more time finding which MoBo works best with their chips. I run an AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual 6400+ Black which idles at 3.20 GHz. I run that at the moment with 4 gigs of high end ram as I will not do Vista for my recording PC and the 64 bit version of XP Pro is a bit unstable. But that is no big deal as I use Sonar and it will utilize the 64 bit processor without a 64 bit OS.
I will state that the newer AMD Phenom X4 quads will almost run at the speed I am getting. And if you OC at all it is catching up to where I can go with the dual I run. My MoBo is built for running OC'd and makes it very stable when I need it. But as of yet I haven't with the newest release of Sonar which has really slimmed the resource use down a great deal.
But on a budget the duals are absolutely killer from AMD. I think you can buy the same chip I have now for under $100 at most places.

Feb 21, 2009 11:38 pm I'm using 2.4GHZ Q6600 Quad core system (HP) Vista, and Win7 (both 32bit), I've never even made it break a sweat yet. The current project I'm doing has 6 instances of Pod Farm going along with 2 Ozone 4, and several compressors, Reverbs, Delays etc. Sonar 8PE is typically running around 15%-27% CPU.

Feb 23, 2009 12:00 pm Exactly, I did a test on the new system and crammed drumagog (very cpu intesnsive), reverb, and delay to about 16 channels. Buffer was at 256 until about channel 15 when I finally started getting clicks.
