Set the virtual memory to about 2 1/2 times the amount of RAM you have, don't let Windows manage it, hard-set the size.

It depends who you talk to, and the exact size doesn't matter as much as the fact it's fixed, the disk space used doesn't then fluctuate, promoting fragmentation with the size going up and down all the time...I have always went with 2 1/2 times, as have most people I know from videographers to server administrators.

The windows reccomended is indeed 1.5 x Ram. I think DB's comment on it being a fixed size vs. dynamic is key though.

Got 3GB ram, set a 4.5GB page file for both the min and the max.

Actually, I think the Windows recommendation is to let IT manage the size, as a whole, I'll take users recommendations over Windows recommendations...they also say not to install drivers that haven't paid their extortion fees.

Windows managed is an "option" :), an option which sets it in a dynamic range of 1 - 1.5 of RAM.

If there are 3Gb of RAM and windows manages it, it will be set to 3GB min - 4.5GB max.

Really, I have had no issues with an MS manage page file and notice no difference when I manage the size myself.

I believe the issue is with dynamic PF sizes you get fragmentation more than a hard coded size.

Alas, I set my computer to defrag once a week at 1am so have not really given it time to notice fragmentation.

I noticed performance differences on FAT file systems on older, less powerful PC's, but yeah, it's marginal any more...and those FAT systems didn't have those parameters either, it'd just shrink and grow as needed...nightmare.

Yep, a lot of it depends on the system as stated. And what exactly you are doing with it. I still do the 2.5x and have for years. Although as stated it isn't nearly as needed now. Unless you are running a system on very little ram. Then it will be seen. I still set all the PC's at work which are running under a gig of ram to 2.5 and it does make a difference.
