i knw the use of compressors as a bass booster(expander),as well as a limiter and stuff but could somebody help me out with this noise gate stuff?

Feb 07, 2009 06:54 am A bass booster isn't an expander - An expander *is* the essence of a noise gate.

Feb 09, 2009 06:47 am Noise gate drops the volume down on anything that doesn't reach a preset volume.
So, if you set the threshold at -10db, then anything that isn't that loud, gets cut out. So you can cut the lingering ringing from toms, or the nasty hi-gain whine from guitar amps. Just the real signal that you want to save gets through, not the background, lower noise.

A compressor makes quiet things louder, and makes loud things quieter. It compresses the dynamic range of a signal. When the signal gets above a certain threshold, a compressor turns it down. Then you use the gain setting to make up for the loss in overall volume due to the threshold and ratio settings.
A noise gate totally shuts off the input signal when it drops below a certain threshold. I don't think that you can set a compressor to do that.
