Type in the password you changed it to. Ya, right. Do you have any other account that you can access? Possibly an admin account? If you cannot access it at all then unfortunately you will have to reinstall Windows.

I tune down down...

Try that... If you turned off the admin account, you're boned.

If you have another drive or are able to purchase one you could install Windows onto the new drive and slave your old one. You should then be able to browse the files on the slaved drive.

Open the case and remove the disc shaped CMOS battery on the motherboard for about 10 minutes. That'll clear the passwords. You'll have to reset the clock after you put it back in.

That won't do anything to the Windows passwords Herb.

You can still do a fresh install without losing anything on the disk, just don't format the partition and install a different partition, when you reinstall Windows, it will install to a new directory (usually Windows2). After you're done you can delete the old Windows directory. You will have to reinstall all your apps though.

You might/would lose the My Documents directory if you use the same partition.

That will work too Dan. I only suggested a new drive so that there is no risk of overwriting anything as long as the drive is removed. In a case like this I would buy another drive and a drive cage for the old drive. Then you could use it as an external drive later on. There are a few ways to do this to save the data.

I think ophcrack mentioned in the article is what you want. It may take some time but usually there is an option to simply blank the password as it's stored as a registry key.

It's just been a while since I've used any of them, so I can't remember what I actually used...

but it was a linux based LiveCD just for resetting passwords.

Ophcrack is the bet on this one. Its the easiest one to use and recover everything.

IF you install to a new partition or new drive you simply put the other partition or drive up and it will show up in Explorer for you to see the files in.

Boot into safe mode, that automatically logs in as the local admin account.

But it won't allow him to change the password unless he has preset it to allow that. It doesn't do it by default if I remember correctly.

I was saying boot into safe mode, that logs you in as an admin. Then goto user accounts and change the password for the problem user.

All depends on XP home or pro I reckon.
