Dithering

What does dithering really do for a master copy? My ears can't tell the difference whether it's a plain old wav file or if the noise type and shapes have been selected. Obviously 16-bit needs to be selected, but how are the noise types and shapes affecting the total sound?

If you want to actually *hear* what the dithering is doing, render a low-level signal (something around -60dBRMS) through several types of dither.

Obviously, it's going to take fairly severe gain to actually clearly hear what's going on after that... But as long as you load them back in and the DAW is throwing calculations in 32 bit (or higher) you'll still get a decent representation of what's happening.
