Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier 3ch. VS. Peavey Triple XXX(R)

For a heavy but tight Thrash Metal sound like Sepultura(Chaos, Roots), Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, what head is better. From what I understand Max uses the XXX now but has used Mesa, and Marshall in the past. I had a Marshall JCM 900 but the Mesa is a better amp in my oppinion. I own the Mesa but have been considering the XXX. Going to Guitar Center won't be enough to see what the XXX is capable of. I was hoping I could hear from some battle tested experience. The only problem I have with the Mesa is no matter how much or how little I put my settings it's always a bit to muddy. Believe me I've put in the time to experiment with the head. I'm sure there are many other variables when adding pre-amps, processors and FX, but which head is a better foundation? Hell let me know if there's better opinions on other amps? I'm all ears. Thanks!!!

Cheers,
Chris

When Max used the Mesa it was modded slightly to do what he needed. Tubes played a big part in the sound he got out of the Mesa. That and the processing he had in front of it. Although not much it is enough to get him that grinding tone.

The Peavey on the other hand was built on the idea of passing the smooth crunch point and heading straight on into the crushing grind tone, with a lot of high end overtones on it.

I'm not calling one better then the other as my preference would be the Mesa. But in you case I think most would state the Peavey is a easier choice to do what you want.

I'd wait for some other opinions on it though for sure.

Try different tubes in your Mesa. I just don't think the XXX will be what you are looking for either. What I would suggest is the new Marshall JVM for that tone. Big, heavy, tight thump(with the right cab.)

Which, what cab are you using!? Haha.

I'm using a Rectifier 4x12 Slant. My tubes are 6L6's.

You could try a couple different tube configs then as well. That can make a huge difference.

Here is on that might be a good place to start. It's a tube used frequently for high gain situation's like yours. Lots of crunch with a maintained bit of clarity.

SED SV6L6GC

Another good one that has a bit of a glassy tone to it in the high end.

Sovtek 6L6 WXT+

Damnit Noize! You beat me to it! Haha.

+1 on the Sovtek's. They are a bit gnarlier and might be what you are looking for.
