stereo and mono pan question.

Ok just a question regarding this.

with mono fair enough i can pan anywhere left or right.

with the stereo tracks, the "combined stereo pan" for example, allows me (i think) to pan anywhere i want. like 25% left and 25% right, or 30% left and 15%right.

would this be good for say positioning the kick or snare or toms?
or would it make them sound thin and squashed?

if i use mono tracks, then really, the snare kick and toms are right across the stereo field as they are left in the middle.

if i use the stereo combined panner, i can put the snare in the middle but can control the witdth of it by setting the pan at say 15% each side of the middle so its not going right across everything.

im just wondering if this is what this pan is for?
does anyone use it like this, or still use mono.

I use mono, then put where I want.

I only use stereo on sources that are created stereo, like my keyboard with phase / chorus / etc.

Drum machines can come in as stereo, but I rarely use one.

Mono for me.

so then your drums(kick and snare), are right across the stereo field.

thats what ive been doing but just wondering about the combined stereo pan.

if you could put the snare in its own little space i wouldve thought that to be pretty sweet.

i have done it but not sure if it the righty to do or not.

I'm not sure about the combined stereo pan thing.

Maybe there's more to this than I'm aware of.

But, I have snare track, and put it where I want it in the stereo field. Say, down the center, or 10% right. Then I'll put mid toms 10%left, adn low tom 30% left. Kick down center.

(these numbers are guestimates)

Seems to have worked quite well, though I've not done a lot of drum mixing.

Maybe others with more experience can chime in. I was just throwing my .02$us in there.

Deon, if yo are talking about the panner type plugin then yes, you can adjust the width to give an image that it is sitting just off center and so on. You would use a very narrow image though to do that.

Panning a stereo track really can take away from a stereo recorded track as well if any FX are used the depend on the image being fully there and not leaned one way or the other.

It all boils down to what sounds good in the piece you are working on.

Experiment, experiment, experiment!!!!

That's all I can say. Don't be afraid to try anything at least once. You'll know if it sucks or not.

cool, yeah i have tried, it definaltey makes it sound clearer.
the panner is actually part of the pan in the track window and you can only get it if the track is a stereo one.

will mess some more with it.
maybe leave the verb pan right across.

thanks for that anyway.
