File size too big!

I've mixed down songs in the past but only recenlty realised that the file is huge for a normal 4 minute song. How can i get the file to mix down into a smaller size OR can i somehow convert it with some program?
eg:
Kind: AIFF file
Size: 49.6 MB
Bit Rate: 1411 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.100 kHz

That's actually a pretty typical file size for a 4 minute AIFF file. I assume you're on a Mac, so you could use iTunes to convert it to an mp3 file that would be somewhere in the 5MB range.

Oh, and welcome to HRC!

I tune down down...

CDex. Good program and free... Does a decent job keeping the compression well... decent.

He can turn down the bit rate a little as well. 1411 is pretty high, although common for an AIFF file. But as stated exporting or converting to an mp3 file at even 320kbps will be much smaller. And even smaller yet if you convert at say 128 or 256 kbps.

That's standard 16-bit 44.1kHz PCM. Nothing "huge" about that at all - It's actually as small as a stereo PCM file would be at a standard resolution.

If you want to drag it down to MP3, that's all fine - But keep in mind that you're dragging the quality down also - If it's ever going to go to CDA again, it's going right back to 16/44.1 PCM.

And I hope that it's fairly obvious that the information destroyed from MP3 transfer doesn't come back... It's gone for good.

IMO, you should be rendering your mix files to 24-bit (target rate is fine, of course) and then exporting as whatever your target file (CDA, MP3, FLAC, etc.) is going to be from that higher-resolution source.

I was assuming that Sacred June wanted a file that was a little more portable and compatible for sharing. Besides, when iTunes converts an AIFF into an mp3, it does it by making a copy and not actually converting the original. Nevertheless, MM's technical explanation is good information for those of you who need/understand it.

More or less assuming that myself - Just throwing it out there as I've been noticing a (horrible sounding) trend out there lately with recording to MP3 - then (of course) mixing to MP3, then posting about how bad the recording sounds on recording forums.

I think more people need to understand that MP3 is a very lossy, non-ideal delivery format aimed at little "ear bud" playback systems. Not "evil" in itself, but the consequences of it should be understood and certainly, what a "normal" file size is should be understood also.

Yep, and you really don't want to record to mp3 quality, then mix down to mp3. I'd soone poor sand and BB's in my ears and shake my head around.
