Hello i am looking into recording my band in the next few months to get a decent quality Demo out just to give out at our first lot of gigs and then prehaps also move onto doing some recordings for my mates bands all that sort of thing !

my question is would something like this

www.presonus.com/products/Detail.aspx?ProductId=5

or

http://en.woodbrass.com/images/woodbrass/M+AUDIO+PROFIRE+2626.JPG

or

www.presonus.com/products/Detail.aspx?ProductId=43

would it set me in the right direction or would i be able to set up a mixing desk into a sound card or is that too much messing for starting out ??

i am going to be wanting to record drums i would of liked more than 8 mic inputs for that but it will have to do ha and then guitar amps miced and vocals would these interfaces do and would they go into my recording software as seperate tracks on my 8 mics of drums ??

Cheers in advance

Those should do just fine. And yes, they will keep each track separate.

I use a mixer, and a interface to get signal into the PC. It works out quite nice, and I can use the mixer separate from the interface, but I don't think I ever have.

It's mostly personal preference, on which way to go. Both ways work nice.

Also, with those interfaces I believe you can daisy chain them together using lightpipe. Therefore, you can obtain your 16 min inputs later when you can afford a second one.

Honestly though, without seperate treated spaces you are probably just as well off recording each instrument seperate.

has anyone tried the presonus firestudio??

i am thinking of getting one of these and i would basically be recording the drums by themselves then the guitars seperate and then the vocals so just to clarify if i used 8 different mics i would get 8 diff channels of recording that i could seperatley change the eq on or mute and solo with only bleed being on each track not the rest of the mic sounds ??

and what is the need of the 2 firewire ports on the back do i need to have 2 firewire ports on my computer ???

You are 100% correct, these would do exactly what you want in regards to capturing sepearate signals.

I believe the firewire can be used to daisy chain the systems as well as the opticals. You do not need two on your PC to run it.

If you want to look at another manufacturer go check out the stuff from Motu. The 8pre is reasonable in price and a good piece of gear that is also expandable.

Last but not least, I use the Line6 UX8. 8 pre's or 6 pre's + two channels of modeling. The song called "chilly" under my profile was recorded last weekend using my UX8.

cheers for the help !!

just another question
www.dv247.com/invt/50046/

would that do the seperate signals for tracks aswel or is it better sticking with a firewire option over a usb 2.0 ??

and would you say get the motu over the presonus and what presonus would be better why are things that look so similar different in price from presonus such as

www.dv247.com/invt/21253/
www.dv247.com/invt/38923/

when to me they seem to do the same thing

On the last two, one is more expensive as it has more I/O options. It includes Spdif, Optical, and a line in where the other, does not. If you plan on expanding to more channels I would definitely get the one with optical in\outs.

Lastly, yes the M-Audio would also record seperate tracks. Looks to be limited in regards to expansion though, I could be wrong.

so basically anything with a optical in and out will expandable some time in the future if needed ??

meaning basically if you bought 2 of these www.dv247.com/invt/48545/

you could connect them both and then use 16 inputs or would you need something else

cheers for all the help
