Hello all,

Great site, Have been trolling for a few days and decided to finally post.

I have decided to embark on a new hobby, Audio recording at home. Working on design of studio so thats not important right now.

I want to record vocals, my drums, sons guitar and daughters Keyboard.

I have a EV dm12 mixer (currently feeding the 7 drums mics into it)

Alesis Multimix8 USB that I feed the two vocal mics into and the Keyboard and PG57 mic for the guitar amp

I am using Cubase4 LE for recording. BUT I am having a hard time getting any vocals to be heard in the recording, I hear them fine and loud through the monitors but one playback they are next to nothing.

Any ideas on what I should be doing here?

Thanks in advance..
Dennis

In the Multimix software control panel you need to make sure the fader's are up and the mute for the channel is not on. Also, in Cubase make certain the track level is up so it does not keep the level down.

Can you see a wav form in the track pane itself? If so is it a pretty good sized wav or is it fairly small?

In the track pane it is really small almost to the point of not being visible at all.

You mentioned in the Multimix software control panel, I dont seem to have this, this is the USB version of it and it only came with the cubase4 le dvd, no drivers for the mixer itself installs just the USB Audio Codec

Am I missing a piece to the puzzle here?

Also should mention that its a Plain usb mixer not the USB 2.0 mixer, I didnt see that one when I ordered it and think I screwed the pooch here...

Yep, there are drivers for the unit and also a firmware update that you might need as well. They can be found here. www.alesis.com/multimix8usb20
Scroll down a bit and you'll see them.

I didn't ask though if you are certain the the gain knob is up enough on the mixer for each of the mic channels. You might be hearing it fine through the monitor's but is it up level wise on the board to get a hotter signal to the software? Check that out as well.

I'm not certain that there is a software control for that model either. I'll look into that a bit further tomorrow.

Ok tried turning up the Gain all the way on it and still the same thing..

Also shouldnt the mics not work at all if I have the Phantom Power turned off?

Also to get any sound to come back through the mixer I have to have both the Gain and the Level darn near maxed, Either with the cheap Nady mic or the Shure pg57.

Thinking I might be better off getting a 8 channel Pre amp to put before the mixers..

The mixers have pre amps in them and as far as I know I have not seen any that did not work.

It has to be something in the way the signal is being assigned in Cubase or through the software control of the interface itself.

Did you go download the driver package and the firmware update for the unit?

That would be the first thing to do as it may take care of any issues that are happening with the drivers not get the signal to Cubase.

I have two different USB interfaces used here and I can choose to use ASIO or WDM drivers, not just a USB Audio Codec. That is a windows default driver which is really a generic audio driver and won't really get you the full use of the equipment.

Ok I will have to look into that, there isnt any drivers that came with this one, and the link is for the USB 2.0 model. It just hangs for ever on the detecting device screen.

I will see if I can find a ASIO driver for it, cause now I had to resort back to using the 2trk Out to the SOund Card in to get it to record, I can hear it fine now, but would like to eliminate the sound card and the noise with it that I know is there, but with the usb as it sits to get it tweaked to have any sort of volume it is Distorted and scratchy.

You listed it as the Alesis Multimix8 USB in your opening post. Is it USB or Firewire?

If it is USB then that is the page you want.

Its USB but it doesnt have any drivers The USB 2.0 model has drivers.

I think I am going to just go ahead and use the 2tk Out to the line in on the sound card for now, and then sell this one and switch to a firewire mixer the first of the year when I build the new Daw.

My own fault really, I should have read a little more on it..
