ok so heres the deal.
i hear alot of good things about the rode, and some good things about the mxl, mostly good or people angry it is a guitar center mic, which i do kind of get.

i am only really considering the mxl over the rode because of versatility, it has 3 pattern settings(Figure-8, omni, and Cardioid) and i would love to play around trying different patterns than Cardioid. also the 4000 comes with a free MXL 603s pencil mic, something else i dont have.

soooo does the rode kick its *** enough to offset this?

I do not own the NT1-A, but I do own the K2 which has the pattern settings and I love playing with them as well.

I think for the money the MXL would be a fantastic purchase.

On a side note, I am having a tough time finding a negative review of the MXL.

I would go with the MXL just on the pattern selection alone. IMO

ive never used a MXL mic, but i have ownd a NT1-A for a while and i am constistently blown away with how well it performs.

So well, that i bought a 2nd NT1-A just to have.

So, where i cant tell you it is better than the MXL, i can tell you that you will NOT be disappointed if you get the RODE. its fantastic for vocals, gets a great feel on acoustic guitars, and even works great as a bright drum overhead.

Plus RODE has fantastic customer service. I dropped one of my NT1-A's down the stairs and it stopped working. I sent it in, without a warrenty card, and they fixed it no questions asked...for free. They were very very polite on the phone, and very quick about getting the mic back to me.

i DEFINITELY recommend the RODE!!!
