I recently got Pro Tools 7 and a microphone which is an Audio Technica
AT2020 Cardioid Condenser. My setup is set up to an mbox. I have been having countless troubles. When I start recording the mic power is either not on or i have to turn my volume on mic real high. Can someone please help me out? I know it sounds confusing, I def think its something with my mic power.

Do you know if your Audio Technica mic is a condensor or a dynamic mic? What's the model # on it?

The AT2020 is an condenser mic. But, dumb question. Did you turn the phantom power on, on the M-Box? Or, it might be marked +48V.

I tune down down...

Yeah, definitely check the phantom power. The AT2020 requires 48 V DC, which the MBox should provide. Try it on a standard mixer with phantom power and see what happens. Also, since you said sometimes you have to turn the input level way up, make sure your addressing the front of the microphone.

Oh, duh. I totally missed that he said it was an AT 2020. Don't drink and post, kids!

If the phantom power isn't working, I think you'll still get a very small signal from the mic. So that sounds right, that the phantom isn't working.

Like Chris said, try it on another device, if possible. Mixer with phantom, etc.

If you have 2 inputs, you could try the other input. Also, you can stick a meter probe into the XLR pin holes. See if you get anywhere near 50vdc (either pos, or neg, it doesn't matter). If there's no 50vdc, in any combination of pins, (and the phantom power switch is turned on), then I'd say either the power supply supplying the phantom is done, or the switch is malfunctioning.

If it's the power supply, then bummer, it may be spendy. If it's the switch, then a little soldering would fix that.

Also, it's possibly the wires are getting loose / corroded / oxidized. Maybe a 'reseat' of the power and ground cables would fix the problem.

These last attempts would be on the inside of the device. If you're not confident opening up the device, don't. Dangerous current can live inside there (and does). It can also poke you after the power is disconnected, so go gingerly.

Oh yeah, try another cable too. The cable may be dropping one pin, and not passing phantom.

You have either a feed back loop or the input gains on the mbox set too high.

That or try unplugging the mic and see if it stops. Then if it stops you will need to check you cable and or mic to see if they are bad.

I don't know what to tell you then. We have covered pretty much all the bases here that would normally cause these issues.

I suggest either getting hold of Digidesign tech support or finding a local guy there who can come and look at what and how you have it set up. It has to be something simple. That or the M-Box is junk.
