VST plugins, compressors

I was just wondering about different VST plugins, mainly compressors. I'd like a good compressor, and maybe some tips about using one. Are they available for download somewhere. Right now I'm using Cubase Le 4, and am not sure whether one was included under a different sort of name and I'm overlooking it, or it just didn't come with one, and where I can maybe find one to use.

Yes, there is a compressor or two in Cubase LE 4. The help section should be able to point you to the names of them. I don't think they are named to far out so you should be able to find one.

But as far as finding one, I listed a link in your other thread to KVR were you can find any type of plugin you need. They have a nice search engine for narrowing your search down and finding just what you need.

As for using one, if you look in our tips and tricks section here at HRC you will find several articles on using them and how to get the most out of them.

Also, you can use the search engine here and it will turn up several hundred threads with advice on using compressors.

If you have a specific question regarding them you don't see covered then ask away.

Le4 has one called "VST Dynamics" its really good i think.

if you just wanna use it as a compressor which would be best, then the other components of it (limiter and gate) turn them off, using the buttons along the bottom.

If you know how to use them then tune em in yerself, the presets wont work too good when it comes to the gate unless you tune it in yourself.

The built-in compressor that comes with Cubase is pretty good (the VST Dynamics that Deon mentions). I always put it on just about every track, if only for the noise gate. That noise gate is a great way to come up with nice, actual silence instead of hiss and ambient noise.

As for VST compressors, I still swear by the Classic Compressor from the Classic Series VSTs by Kjaerhus. As far as free compressors go, its at the top of my list.

Then there is the more exaggerated compressor in the Fish Fillets series of VSTs and the Camel Phat compressor.

I also have a couple of multiband compressors that work well. Cubase SE came with one, and its stellar (assuming I could ever figure out how the hell to work it properly).

And Deon is right about presets. When it comes to compressors, presets are pretty much worthless. Learn what all of the knobs do and you can dial in your own settings that fit your audio signal. Feel free to ask around here, or search the forums since compressor settings and parameters have been discussed many many times.
