Mastering, Ozone, Etc.

Hey.
So i stumbled across this forum searching on google. I read a post about the izotope Ozone program for mastering. The guy that needed help said that his volume on playback after mixdown was not as high as that of commercial music. I have this problem too. A lot of people seem to recommend and use Ozone to boost the final mixes volume. I looked at the program, but don't have the 200 to put towards it at this point. So i was wondering if anybody knew of a program that could serve with the same functions to increase volume and such, for free, or a way of doing this without purchasing ozone.
Thanks

There are many free plugins out there that can do similar things.

You are looking for a maximizer which is a mastering type compressor. Most that are usable will be the multi-band type. Which means they have an EQ section that works with the compressor to maximize volume and emphasize certain frequencies.

Have a look at the link below to the KVR page that has the free ones. I'm sure you will find something there.

Nope, for mastering you only want to apply it to the main outputs. In other words the master stereo buss out.

I normally will export the mix out as a stereo track and then master the final stereo mix. You really don't want to process all the tracks individually.

sick thanks. kinda dumb question maybe, but I have never done it so, how would you go about installing these plugins. They come up as a dll file i think it's called when i download them, so would i just open them up through cubase somehow?

You need to drag the .dll file into the Cubase VST folder which can be found as a subfolder in the main Cubase folder. Then have Cubase scan for new VST plugins and it will recognize it for use.

Keep in mind that (A) multi-band compression is actually a very, very rare thing during the mastering phase and more importantly (B), it can take a lot more than a plugin to get "commercial volume" -- Most mixes will never see that kind of volume no matter how experienced and well-equipped the mastering engineer is.

The mix is in charge of its volume potential -- The mastering engineer is in charge of actually bringing out that potential while doing as little damage as possible.

DISCLAIMER: Let's also not confuse "mastering" with "volume." Although the final volume is decided and executed during the mastering phase, it's generally "the easy part" and more or less, an afterthought. It's not "mastering" -- It's just a very small part of the process.

On Ozone, it's a powerfull and usable piece of software. But... it is powerfull enough to really destroy a mix if you don't know how to use it. If you are gonna use it, don't use the presets (unless you just want to get an idea of settings) and spend some time listening.

I tune down down...

I love Ozone. But, as CPT said, the presets lack some. Haha.
