You can buy 'phantom power supplies' to plug the mic into...

otherwise... yeah, you could usually use an AUX send on the interface... don't even need to use the compressor... no AD/DA conversion involved either.

Ya, a direct send out of the interface will be just that. A direct shot to the desk.

sweeet. thanks guys.
that's a point though,
if i do use the compressor, where would i put it in the chain?

i have already dumped a song to tape via my interface and it sounds fine. does this mean the interface has a D/A converter?

Just before the decks input is were you'd want the compy.

so going into the desk from compy, D/A conversion isnt going to be a problem?

i'll be honest, i dont know how this conversion works or even how to tell if its a problem at the time. can i hear it?

ok, so i've connected everything like this.

interface(balanced line out with a mono cable)> compressor in> compressor xlr out> desk (mic in. xlr)

i "cant" get any signal like this,
but when i plug a mic straight into the compressor and out into the desk, its all good.

the signal isnt coming out of the "line out" of the interface.
"signal in" light works though.

Don't run line-level into a microphone input or you risk starting to blow things up rather quickly (unless you have some balanced 50dB pads lying around).

Does the desk not have inserts? Input or mixing chain, that's what they're there for.

Plugging the mic into the compressor shouldn't really work - Mic level into line level isn't going to give you nearly enough gain to trigger the sidechain circuit. The compressor is a line level device.

hey MM,
the desk has no inserts, but the compressor does.
the desk does have a send and a rcv.
it also has a line in.
obviously these are on all channels. there are a heap of other things on the desk but nothing resembling what you mentioned.

the compressor was working with the mic plugged into it.

the signal is definatley stopping at the line out on my digi interface.

like i said im going from the interface to the input of the compressor. should i be using the sidechain insert?
and then into the line in of the desk?

so got it going now
cheers

Next time you need them, that's the insert.
