What type of mic for recording

I was interested to hear from everyone their views on the best microphone for acoustic guitars, vocals (generally not percussion). Price range $50-$150 (OK, so I'm a cheapskate). Given my budget should I aim at second hand stuff?

PS. Thanks for previous advice - I've now bought a small Behringer mixer(602)and recording with ease again. No compressor as yet but the Blockfish plugin seems to be doing a reasonable job. Just trying the plugin the adds Talent. Oh well.

Here are some sub $150 mics for you to check out.

Seeing as you already own Behringer products, you may be intersted in either of these two:

Behringer B2 Condenser $149.99 www.musiciansfriend.com/s...ase_pid/270399/

Behringer B1 Condenser $99.99 www.musiciansfriend.com/s...ase_pid/270405/

People round here reccomend Oktava prodcuts (tho I have never used one myself so...)

Oktava BLEM MK012 Condenser $130 www.musiciansfriend.com/s...l/base_id/55419

Hope that helps
jues.

Good recomendations Jues!

TwoCents on Mk012. Great for guitar. I do prefer a large diaphram for vocals however. For all around I would look to the top of Jues list. The Behringers.

Thanks - so most of you think the condenser mic is the way to go rather than a dynamic?

For acoustic guitar and vocal work? No question about it. I think the B2 would make an excellent mic for your needs.

Got to try a B2 last week, it was a very clear sounding mic. Real flat response, and very nice pick up patterns. As jues said, it would work well for both vocal and close micing of a guitar.

Ok, Finally got a set of B2's in and tested. They where on back order at MF. First impression (limited testing) was that pretty much as Noise mentioned clean and flat. (good things) I ran then with a set of NT1's, and there was not much difference. The NT1's where a little more crisp. This was a very limited test but as far as I can tell they are a very welcome addition to the mic box!

Bought two. I saw no option for "matched" sets. They seem to be plenty close so far. I picked them up for their omni patern. With the set of NT1's center on 90deg that will make up the modified deca tree we talked about. I will be testing them real good on the 29th. I will be using the B2's to record about a 3 hour panel / group discussion (good omni work) and then the big band with the deca in the evening. Should get plenty of sample to check them out.

I will get the recording loaded up and give them a real good inspection day after recording and put in a post for you. I get a lot of tones and a full frequency spectrum to work with recording the BB. The only aspect that I don't see being able to test is the cardiod patern.

I would trust that they will have decent pattern. The rest of their gear seems to all fall into a pretty tight tolerance as far as keeping things on the up and up. So I would suspect they have it down.
