Help with recording Folk

I'm apart of this band titled The Great New Wonderful and it's in the genre of Folk Rock.

I have two albums currently on iTunes which I recorded at two different studios in my local area.

Now, I have some new songs and albums I want to work on but I'd prefer to record from home.

My music is of the likes of Noah and the Whale, Laura Marling and in that area of such.

Does anyone have any suggestions for software and recording equiptment that is of the best quality for the cheapest price?

I have an HP with Vista, 930 Intel Pentium D processor with two processing cores, 2.0 GB of RAM (memory) and a NVIDIA GeForce 7300LE graphics card.

I am computer savvy, so just point me in the right direction and I think I can pick it up quick.

Your computer looks up to the task, but I'm assuming you have onboard sound so that would be the first thing to take care of. Some thing along the lines the M-Audio FastTrak Pro would be a good choice, or Line 6 ToneportUX2.

Software is wide open, probably the cheapest would be Reaper it's pretty full featured for it's price and does a good job.

In the full commercial offerings starting with something along the lines of Sonar Home Studio (~$99 street) or Sonar Studio Edition (~$299 street) would be a good choice and give you an upgrade path if later you decided you needed more bells and whistles.
