And I think McCain wins. Comedy is more sacred to me than politics (which isn't really scared at all to me; it's more of a mindless obsession, an ongoing battle).

After one viewing, it appeared to me that McCain's writer provided the better jokes. And that McCain was more comfortable and stumbled less. The audience reaction was heartfelt and honest. And McCain is able to do this sort of thing. Straight face, playing the mischievous straight man. No one's ever doubted that this was a feature of his personality.

I do want to point out one thing about Obama's performance, though. At 3:52, Obama delivers a line absolutely perfectly, old-skool Johnny Carson/Golden Age broadcast style. "So tonight I'd like to talk about the economy." That timing was really spot-on, as was the fall of the voice, the seriousness.

McCain impressed me a bit more, but it was a good showing by both. If the actual debates were like this, that'd be cool.

I'll watch these when I get to work, but I will say, overall, that the more conservative people I know tend to be happier, funnier, more fun people, the liberals, for all their "tolerance and acceptance" often seem to be more crabby and just generally unhappy and take themselves far to serious.

I dunno, I'm just sayin...that is what I see, and there actually are a few studies out there that indicate the same thing...and WEL ALL KNOW, studies are always accurate and never bias :-)

you mean 'biased' -- sorry, the lack of the -ed is one of my pet peeves

the thing you're talking about is the stereotype. but all through my 20s and even up till now i don't find it to be true in real life with the people i've known. maybe it becomes true as people get older. thinking about things all the time tends to make you sour.

but i would say that if there's any truth to the idea at all, it's actually reversed in young people.

most things are reversed in young people...

I find it to be very true...not 100% true, but a lot. My liberal friends are usually the ones whining and complaining about something in the world...when something gets fixed they find a new cause to whine about...they just refuse to be happy.

but maybe I'm bias. :-p

i made a mistake, though. what i meant to say is that i kind of think liberal people tend to be funnier--on the grounds that misery often breeds humor. not necessarily happier, but funnier.

it does, however, seem to me that conservative older peeps tend to be happiest. young peeps are by default in large part (few responsibilities, etc.) again i think that thinking too much is not good for the happiness.

That's true, the best comics are angry, hateful people (or their stage character is anyway)

Louis Black comes to mind...

comics are sometimes angry or act that way, but they also have a long history of being generally neurotic--that's mainly what i meant. just thinking too much might be associated with liberalism. some of those studies we talked about got into that a bit. seeing things from many angles and thus basically having too many selves in conflict with each other.

That's true, similar studies to the general "happiness" type studies also show that conservatives are more concerned about their immediate lives and the lives of the people around them, whereas the liberal mind often looks much wider...and therefore, I presume, is easier to find more to be upset about...
