Yamaha KA20 Crackle

I'm using a pair of powered yamaha KA20 speakers in a small venue and recently one of the speakers developed a crackle. The crackle is not constant and seems to be triggered by certain frequencies that are being played through the speaker. In the worst cases the crackle becomes very loud and the sound cuts out completely for a second and returns (I'm assuming due to a limiter of some sort in the speaker).

I was wondering if anyone has experienced a similar situation and is aware of a fix or a method to further diagnose the problem?

Thanks

Does the speaker do it at only high volume, or at low volumes as well?

You do realize that the unit you are using is a vintage keyboard amp type unit and was never intended to be used as a PA type speaker?

Those things sell for some decent money most times if in good shape.

But on to the problem at hand.

I am guessing you have fried something in the amps section of the unit as it is a bit on the older side. I would take it into a qualified tech, unless you handy with that. Then you may be able to discover what ails it.

Thanks to both of you for your quick replies. To answer dB Masters's question the speaker only crackles at higher volumes. I've discovered that it's the vibration of the speaker that's causing it. If the speaker is lightly tapped when operating it usually causes the crackle. Could this be due to a loose or broken resistor?

Noize2u... if I were to substitute the ka20's for a proper pa, how powerful and what type of system would you recommend? I'm running vocals, guitar, bass and occasionally some synths and drums machines through the speakers. There are also acoustic drums that the speakers need to compete with.

WOW! Your trying to pump that much bandwidth through a keyboard amp?

Well, there is where the noise is coming from. Your killing the amplifier inside it.

By the sound of what you are discribing, it is already damaged.

As for the proper PA. Well, that depends on your budget, and how large of a room that you are playing to.

There is an endless amount of manufactures, and an endless amount of configurations.

Let us know your budget, and room size that you are in. Well see what we can come up with.

Thanx Rob, I was worried I might have to turn on the Bat Beacon and summon you. :-)

Ya, that is actually a Vintage bit of gear and was really cool in the day for just a simple organ or Rhodes or Farfisa, but running that much through it is really pushing its limits.

I'll let Rob take it from here as he is the PA gear expert here and knows his stuff.

Yeah, been away on vacation up in Vermont.

No cell phone service, no internet connection.

The only thing that was there was my wife and nature. Perfect for me.
