Tacam US-1641 Macbook Issues

Hi there heres a rundown of my problem.
For the past year i have been running this interface on xp with little problems other than latency (slow computer).
Recently i took the leap went mac thinking that macs make the ultimate audio recording machine and i would have to say i am dissapointed. Latency is EVEN worse on this macbook than my slower older computer... Also i decided to run XP using bootcamp and using XP my inferface now has no latency issues! so whats the deal? is there a solution?
Id rather use os x than xp any day.
Thanks in advance for any help.

hmmm interesting. well using bootcamp xp i can have it on the lowest latency setting which it 4/7ms input/output which i think is around 64 buffer. i can have it that low on bootcamp with out any glitches at all. however for there to be no glitches showing up under os x i have to have the buffer set at 198 which is something like 10/20ms input/output or near enough. i can drop it right down to 64 but there are drop-outs every few seconds. Ah dear.

198 is hell low, i can use up to 512 and still not notice the latency on playback.

are you using direct monitoring? sounds like that could be your problem if you arent.

if you use direct monitoring you'll have no problems on 198. i would at least go to 256 though to make sure there is no audio drop out.

what software ya using?

well its not that latency is a problem for playback or even monitoring it just puzzles me that i can get such low latency on xp using my macbook then i can running os x. 198 is pretty low and on 198 i have recorded 10 track with no dropouts and all those tracks are being monitored at the same. but using bootcamp xp im able to have it on 64 with 10 tracks recording and all being monitored. now i would assume that all that would be possible on os x but i doesn't seem to be. im running cubase le 4 on both operating systems. its a nice piece of software. what about you?

im using Cubase 4. i really like it.
when i record i use the direct monitoring, so i turn the little orange speaker button in my track off.
that way ya dont get "any" latency whatsoever and the latency is more for the recording of the signal side of it.

i think i can can go really low with the latency but havent tried that as yet. all seems to be good in that respect.

oh yeah? so you mean you monitor from that mixer? the thing i like about monitoring from the computer is that when you have the orange button on what you hear is what is actually being recorded. ive had mixers in the past were ive used direct monitoring and here i am thinking that what im recording is gonna sound great but the fat hits the fan when i go back to listen to it because the direct monitoring believe it or not seems to sound different to the actual recording.. i like monitoring from the computer for that reason so thats why latency bugs me. i wonder if theres anyone else in my boat? just for a test set up your cubase with 10 tracks all being recorded at once and all with the orange monitor button down. (dont worry about having 10 things plugged in the mixer tho)also have your buffer set to 64. could you try that for me? do you hear any dropouts or clicks? let it record for at least a few minutes for a good test.

Thanks Deon

i monitor straight from the Tascam itself. so from mic to Tascam to speakers. you can adjust the levels of input and computer with the nob under the monitor button of the Tascam.

i dont use any effects or anything like that as im recording, i just put them on after. so i dont need the orange button. i just use that to make sure its all running ok.

i just get my sound the way i want it by ear and then straight out through the unit via direct mon. then go back in and add whatever.
but yeah, if you wanna use the mixer in cubase and/or effects as you are going in, then you will have to use direct monitoring. like for vox, ya probably need the effects and compression as you go.

Can i ask what you are recording all at once? are you doing a whole band?

oh you dont have to have 10 mics i only have 1 mic! but to test i just set all tracks up as if i have a mic plugged into each input and then i press record.

oh yeah i know what you mean. if i record on 256 or around that i get stuff all latency with the orange button on.
it doesnt bother me anyway.
