This is freakin' Weird! (Virus?)

OK, I'm now a Mac guy, so I'm out of the loop with Windows stuff. My wife's laptop is running Vista, and her Internet Explorer is acting up. It's "stuck" on the Bed, Bath & Beyond website. I can't close it no matter what I try. Click on the red "X". Nope. It just dings at me. Try opening another tab and then try closing the original one. Nope. It just dings at me. I can close the new tab, but not the original or main B, B & B site. It won't even open any links on the B, B & B website. We're stumped. Any ideas?

Thanks!

OK, so I did the old Restart (i thought my wife had tried that) and it took care of the problem...for now.

Still...has this ever happened to anyone before?

Only when my kids have gone to the naughty sites and they lock you onto the page while infecting crap into your PC.

I wonder if B, B & B got hijacked or something today.

Never happened to me that I couldn't close a tab. I'm on Vista with IE7 too. Just went to the site and did not encounter any problem.

Your wife has security software running on her laptop? It won't hurt to do a full scan. Noize could be right ya know. Better safe than sorry.

bloody viruses!! my avg went down last week, and i didnt realize for a day or so at least.
ended up with this trojan horse through a porn site, that came flooding into my computer from a nursery rhymes site!

what the??
anyway, once i got that, an anit virus 2008 program came crashing in too and it almost renederd my computer useless. i couldnt open my gmail or do anything without this F***** thing poping up etc etc.
i tried doing everything to get rid of the trojan's but they just kept coming back, along with the anti virus thingy.

in the end, i deleted the anit virus proggie that lodged itself in many places, and then finally the trojan's stoppped coming in.

Im now not wondering if this damn anti virus "was" the virus??? is it possible the trojan's are still in my computer even though the full scan wont pick em up?
either way, i just want to kill whoever makes them.

sometimes I have seen weird JavaScript hacks that will maintain focus on a window, so any attempt to focus on something else would fail, not sure how that would tranlate to a tabbed environment.

Get your wife FireFox...IE is a disaster waiting to happen.

Deon, the dreaded XP Antivirus 2008 is indeed a trojan, and likely still on your machine. I had some experience with it on my last job. SpyBot Search and Destroy will remove it. Here's how:

Do a complete scan. At some point, a warning message may pop up advising you to stop the scan. DON'T STOP IT. It's a trick of the trojan. After the scan, SpyBot will tell you it needs to run on startup. Allow it to do so. This is so that SB can load into the OS before the trojan in order to disable it. Then reboot and let the scan run again. It will catch and remove XP AV 2008.

Caveat: This little insidious bastard of a program has been known to change some system settings. One PC I worked on had some tabs in the display settings disappear, but I was able to fix it in regedit.

There is a manual removal method here:

Good luck, mate.

The manual removal does work best. SpyBot can be fooled by it even on the start up scan. It is a nasty little bugger and in the cases I have seen appears to duplicate itself even on start up or shutdown.
