I just realized how noisy my studio was. I hooked up the condenser, put on my headphones, and turned the volume up and behold - let there be noise. My computer puts off A LOT of noise. It has at least 4 case fans I think. I can also hear the a/c blowing out the vents. And to think that I actually record and mix with all this noise going on. At least vocals are the only thing I'm recording that's not DI as of now. I guess I could turn the a/c off when laying down vocals, but it gets really hot in this room. Especially when it's nearly 100 degrees outside. Maybe I can just use a plugin to eliminate most of the background noise? I have Waves.

Jul 24, 2008 08:19 pm I have a really long cable for my condensor. I put singers in the room across the hall. A noise gate should get rid of the background noise when the vox are silent, and when vox are going they should be powerfull enough to not even hear it. Noise can be dealt with to an extent, but less is definitely better.

Jul 24, 2008 08:45 pm Yeah, plan for quiet takes, and only accept noise when you can't do anything about it.
When I was using my garage as studio, I put my PC outside the inner wall, through a small hole for cables. It sucked, but it kept the sound out of the mic.
Now I have separate control room / live room, so that issue is no longer.
Jul 24, 2008 09:10 pm Hmm, that's not a bad idea. I do have an extra room that I'm just using as a storage room. Maybe I can rearrange some things and run the mic and headphones out to the other room.
I'm just leasing a house right now so I can't do too many major modifications. I can't wait until I can buy a house and have a proper studio.

Jul 24, 2008 09:12 pm It's also worth looking at ways to silence your PC.
I found this site.

I know nothing abut them but it should kick you off with some ideas.
I've got an Antec Sonata 3 case with a 1000w Power supply and it's super quiet.
