I have a desktop hp pavillion with 256mb ram
M Audio Fast Track Usb
M Audio Audio Buddy Dual mic pre amp
MXL 990 Condenser microphone
I want to record vocals over instrumental mp3's/wav.. I have cool edit 2.0
The original Sonar,
Fruity Loops 8, and M powered pro tools but I cant use it because I dont have the required ram 386 mb... Any Freeware or is it possible to make do with what I have. I just have a basic soundcard, I didnt bother going that route because I bought the fast track interface...Any Suggestions???

Jul 20, 2008 09:14 pm First off how fast is the processor in the PC? If it only has 256m of ram I am guessing you are probably barely at a 1 gig processor or slightly above.
That might just barely be enough but it should work. Your biggest hurtle is going to be latency while recording while playing back a wav or mp3.
The Fast Track should be up to the job indeed. But my suggestion if the processor is fast enough is to dump at least a gig of ram in that PC for sure. That will help keep it running smoothly while doing what you need to do.

Jul 21, 2008 07:58 am Try reaper, for small footprint.
from their page:
Minimum system: 500mhz processor, Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista/WINE with 128MB RAM, 10MB free disk space, 800x600 in 256 colors or higher, Windows compatible sound hardware
You can play mp3 and record wav with Reaper as well.
