Cannot get my mixer to read in Cubase LE 4 (Complete Newbie)

Background:

First of all, I am completely new to the Audio Recording world. I want to make a show with 4 mics being recorded at the same time.

I bought an Alesis Mulitmix 8 USB mixer which came with Cubase LE 4. I also have 4 mics with mono jacks (Dunno exact name because I'm new).

Just so you know, I did not install a driver for USB2.0, it said to only install that if my mixer is USB2.0 and I don't think it is. Everything else should be installed properly though.

My computer is pretty good and should be fully updated.

The mixer and mics work, I tested them with my dad's amp.

Problem:

I am getting no audio into Cubase. I don't have a clue on how to get Cubase LE 4 to hear my mics. I'm not understanding much from the manual. I have just been messing around a bit with "VST Connections" but I really don't know what I'm doing.

Thanks a million in advance. I have been trying to figure this out all day.

hey there Ferret!
you're on the right track there with VST connections.
basicly your VST connections are where you assign or your inputs and outputs.
for example in VST connections you will have Inputs and output tabs. your "output" tab is where you choose how you want your output to be routed, in this case you want the output to come out in stereo through your speakers. it should already be at that but if you look it will say stereo and you shouyld see you interface name there too.
ok now go click on "inputs" you should assign an input that corresponds to the what input you are plugged into on you device. eg; if you have mics in 1,2,3 and 4 inputs on your device, then you need to set up 4 mono inputs in the inputs column, as follows; find the "add bus" tab and click, under the count heading, put "4" and where it says stereo, click and choose mono. you should always record in mono by the way.
cool ok thats that done.
if you have already done this then your problem is probably in your project(song)
where you have your first track, in the inspection window to the left, you will see "audio 1" click on it and check that it says "mono in" and under that "stereo out. now you should have audio. all this is in the manual under getting started, i know its daunting at first but you'll get it.
as for the usb 2.0, if your computer is up to date etc, dont even worry about that, but if you wanna check, you need to go to device manager in your computer and check in the devices section "USB controller" click and see what it says. 2.0
let me know how it goes.

Your computer will be the USB 2.0 part of the equation. So yes, you will need to install the drivers for that. They will be what allows the computer to actually use the mixer and see it as an audio interface.

Thanks for the replies, I bet the problem is that I didn't install the USB 2.0 drivers.

Last night we actually recorded just fine with Audacity. I have a lot of work ahead of me so I won't have time to work on setting this up for a few days. If I don't reply back, all went well. Thanks again!
