First (Proper) Go at String Quartet

My first on this forum, haven't really looked around whether this is the right kind of place that look into this kind of stuff, but anyway.

Basically I had a assignment for my Music 2 class at school to hand in a String Quartet composition expressing features of the classical period (you could go off an a little bit of a tangent here, say introduce some romantic features but try not to delve into contemporary stuff).

The stucture we had to create it in was Theme and Variations and I had a term to do it. Naturally, I wrote the theme straight away, left it for 9 weeks, then did it on the last 3-4 days of the last week and bam.

Basically I'm just asking if any of you guys here who study music could analyse somewhat or just listen to what I've done. Would like some criticism or the like.

To those that don't study music, this is gonna sound really, corny, no wait it would to anyone LOL. But I just made this from scratch to hand in, I'd refine it if I truly wanted to do something with it.

Anyway www.uploading.com/files/H...ompMUS.MID.html

EDIT: Oh the variations if you cant pick it out -The key is in C. first variation is just a simple mess around with texture and rhthym. Second variation is a modulation to relative minor (A), third and last variation is .. a variation of the theme, the second half of the third variation I went on a tangent and introduced some new chords, but mostly the same ending, kinda not happy with it though. Still my teacher said she's tempted to play this for the chamber ensemble, just a try anyway lol. Alot of things I could so easily refine, had I the time or was it more than just a simple marked assignment.

I really love composing, next year might major that for my HSC. (Aussie year 12 examinations for University admittance)

I'd love to have a listen but that page refuses to load anything but an advert. You can upload here if you go to the tab above marked My Account. Then the drop down menu go to Manage My Songs. There is an upload option and you can upload your piece here for everyone to listen to.

I tried going to that page several times and it was the same each time.
So give at upload here and I'll give it a listen.

Andrew, I don't see anything in your song list. Maybe because your project is a MIDI file?

Indeed, there is now music in there. Is it an mp3? That is what it needs to be to upload it here, or almost anywhere.

Ok cool I finally got my song up, thanks to Nightcap who converted my midi for me, I am really greatful!

Some of the articulation (staccatos etc.) was lost but most of its still good, listening to it again, I don't really like the ending, two bars of V and V7 is pretty weak I realised, that or it was just the way I notated it in the parts.

Anyway now that I finally got it up (phew) what do you guys think?

Great to see your song up!

The original recording has less legato than the MP3. No matter what you do, you will loose quality while converting. :-(

You already know that I like what you composed, but I'll say it again. To me it has the right classical feeling. The one thing I'm not happy with is the ending. However, that's not a critical issue and you can easily fix it.

I look forward to more!

Well, nicely done Andrew. I liked it, and the variations were done very well. Some attempts can sound as if they don't fit, but your seemed to flow together nicely. I did like the ending as well, it worked to add a bit of jolliness to the piece. I could see her wanting to submit it. Nothing was overdone which can happen sometimes with too much going on. This was just right.

On a side note. Nightcap, what software or synth did you convert the strings with if I may ask?

I'll be glad to answer your question Noize2u.

Andrew's MIDI file was played using a computer sequencer through a Yamaha S90 keyboard, connected to my analog equipment for the reverb and effects. When it sounded right the song was recorded with a Tascam HD recorder. I realize that I do things differently than most members here, but hey, I'm kinda old schoolish. :-)

I converted the WAV to a 160 KBits/sec VBR MP3 with SoundForge.

Since this was not my MIDI file, I didn't want to experiment and I used the General MIDI string ensembles 1 & 2. If Andrew had been here those choices would have probably been different.

What I meant with the ending btw, is not the way he played it. That is OK, but when you listen carefully you can hear that the last few notes sound like they have a tiny echo and that I didn't like. It's not the reverb because the original MIDI has it too, even when bypassing all keyboard effects.

Hopefully I didn't bore you with too much information. LOL

i really like all the phrasing, the syncopation, and the ending i didnt find bad at all. it doesnt sound like a quartet to me...but, im listeing on a laptop. it sounds like there is three violins playing the medley....i really like the pauses with the cello lines. good stuff.

Thanx Nightcap, never boring to me. I've been doing midi since it was born. I'm always curious as to what people are using.

Good that you weren't bored. Sadly I was already around for some time when MIDI was born... ;-)

BTW wouldn't it be a nice idea to have a thread where new members can introduce themselves? I know there is the bio area in the profile, but still.
