CoolEditPro recording advice

Hi all...I have cooleditpro and am just getting started. I would like to use my PC with my soundcard to record/remix/master music. Whats the easiest and cheapest way to record a full band using my PC all at the same time, while still keeping each instrument as a separate track in CEP?

first step, purchase a sound card with as many inputs as you need tracks for the different instruments.

Where can I find one of those? Im not able to spend too much money at the time being so im kindof limited, but i havent even seen a sound card with multiple inputs so far...not sure if im just not looking in the right places.

Also, Im assuming if I just wanted to use what ive got for the time being, id have to record one instrument at a time, is that correct?

Yeah, to keep each track seperate you are going to have to spend some money.

If you are willing to have the drums on one stereo track you could accomplish that with a mixer.

You must also consider how many mics you will be using on your drums. If you list what you already have we might be able to make some suggestions.

Honestly though, I spent about $1000 for an 8 channel soundcard, a drum mic kit and the cables to run it on my first rig. You might be aiming a little high depending on your budget.

You may want to check craigslist for you area and see if you can't find some of what you need there. If you have questions about anything just ask.

well im barely just starting so all i really have is cooleditpro, my pc, and a cheap mic...id like to eventually get a whole setup but right now my budget is basically nothing for the time being, so i guess for now i just need to learn how to do the mixing, recording and all so when i do get the equipment i at least have some clue of what im doing.

Actually I started out exactly like you, one PC and one mic. I simply programmed drums on my drum machine (much easier in software nowadays) and recorded guitars\bass\vox one at a time. It can be done.

Someone might be able to reccomend a cool software drum machine that is free.

www.kvruadio.com

Go there and have a search through their synth stuff. I know there are a couple there as well.

You can also try Googling for a few. Not sure how many free ones will show up though.

Actually, if you want to drop $200 or so on the project, the M-Audio 1010LT is only $199:

I use a Delta 44 card myself, which I got for about $160. Four inputs, no waiting. Works very well, and the sound quality is a damn sight better than what you'll get with your basic sound card.

It *IS* possible to record two separate tracks at once with CEP and a regular sound card, although you'd need some sort of external mixer to do it. I recorded my first four albums that way.
