Buzzing with Shure KSM 137 and Behringer Ultragain 200

Hi Guys,

ive been having problems with my KSM 137 Condenser mic, my current setup is

KSM 137 into a Stagg Phantomn Box into a Behringer Ultragain 200 into my M-Audio Audiophile 2496.

The Ultragain has a XLR and Large Jack output, the lead i am using is a Jack to double phono's into my 2496 card, but there is a lot of buzz on the line. If i plug headphones straight into the Ultragain its fine, but if I go from Jack socket to either a stereo mixer or into my 2496 card there is a lot of hiss/buzz.

One of my mates seemed to think it was the output level of the Jack out, but ive had this working before with no problems using the jack out, and it doesnt seem to be the ultragain that has
popped (my last one did) because its fine through the headphones...does anyone know what I can do to troubleshoot this?

Cheers

Chris

It sounds like the "double phonos" are the problem, though I'm not sure what a "Large Jack" is--are the line(s) out of the Ultra Gain balanced or unbalanced? I think that the XLR out of the UG is balanced, and you're going into an unbalanced, in. Since the phones work, the UG doesn't seem to be at fault. Do you always send the signal in through the RCAs on the 2496? Your mate could be right: the signal going into the 2496 might be too hot.

Ya, the UG is a single channel or mono pre amp. It should not be fed to 2 channels on the sound card as that will actually do damage eventually to the inputs of the sound card. You are crossing the 2 channels with a single ground line and that is not good.

You need to only use one of the 2496's inputs and then simply pan it centered in your recording application.

ok guys thanks,

i will give it a try, i have an XLR to single RCA lead somewhere.

will let you know my findings :)

Tim - i have always used the RCA's for Line In yeah, just wondering if i've damaged my card in the process and a large Jack is a 1/4" TRS Output, both ouputs are balanced.

Hi guys,

think ive cracked it, ive swapped out one of the leads that was between the mic and the phantomn power amp and have switched the lead from pre amp to soundcard for a XLR to RCA lead.

there was some minor buzz, but i think this was prob just due to my output level on the preamp, ive set this to 0db and tweaked the gain down slightly from max.

i wont know for sure until i get my mic into my little soundproof cupboard but there seems to be only minimum hiss, which could just be pc noise i think.

thanks again.

Chris
