Equipement for voice recording

Hi

I am looking for a simple home recording device - USB or Firewire

I need to plug in a an XLR mic
Also a set of headphones

The idea is to use the PC to play back the pre-recorded music track, listening to the music via the headphones and record the voice track.

Just like in a pro studio.
I want this type of setup to avoid feedback / etc from speakers to the mic while recording.

I know I can just listen to the music from the PC card sound out, but I don't want to do this.
I want everything to go through the external USB/ firewire device.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

You can look into something like the Ma-Audio Fast Track or the Line 6 Toneport UX-1. Either of those will allow you to do exactly what you described. There are others as well that will work but those 2 are pretty stable and work very well.

Thanks for the rapid reply
I think the Line 6 looks good and I can get it locally.

I got the Line 6 UX1 device
Installed software and plugged in - all OK
I then started doing the web updates
Device said unplug and wait till instructed to plug into USB again
When I got to where it says plug in again, USB on PC says device is drawing too much current.
So I plug into a powered USB hub - power goes off. UX1 device is dead shorting the usb output.
Doesn't like unplugging/replugging USB even when instructed?
Anyway I've now got to deal with Line 6 tech services.
I'll post on this when is device is repaired/replaced.

I'm guessing there is something wrong with your USB port that you were using.

And as a warning, never, ever plug it into a USB hub, it will slow the device down.

And depending on the computer you will want to use one of the rear USB ports that is right on the MoBo as they are connected the best and not routed through another little set of wires to get to the front.

I have never heard of that happening at all. I do that routine every time an update comes out or I need to set up another PC to use mine. I am wondering if you have either one of two issue's.

Your ports are USB 1.0 or you have a bad cable. The device unless messed with will not short out a USB port or hub.

OK, checked out a few things.

You can use USB 1.1 or 2.0 ports with it. But the ports must be buss powered ports. It is not advised to use a Hub as they are not supported at all.

How to tell between a USB 2.0 VS USB 1.0 Connection Q: Can I use a USB Hub to connect my Line 6 unit to my computer? A: No, USB hubs are not supported in any application of Line 6 hardware. Q: Which type of USB is my Line 6 device compatible with? A: Most Line 6 USB products are compatible with USB 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0. The following Line 6 units are compatible with all 3 types of USB Ports: Guitarport

Thanks for comments
Maybe I wasn't clear enough

I used a direct to USB on main board(Brand new Intel G31/Q6700 proc). The UX1 device connected and installed with original CD. When I did the web update the instructions on the screen were to disconnect and reconnect when instructed to. I did this - result no more connection light on UX1 & message from Windows - USB device is drawing too much current.

I tried a powered USB (not even connected to PC) to check light comes on. The UX1 is shorting the USB hub (power light goes out on hub when UX1 connected, comes back when disconnected)

I have tried 3 different USB cables.

I got a Monday morning UX1.
It's going back to Line 6.
Hope it's a one off and they don't all do this....

Bad start

Email to Line 6 to explain
Eamil address on guarantee card - "[email protected]" comes back with permanent delivery failure.

Anyone got a valid email address to request an RMA in Europe (France)

Found this:

Fuzz It - Centre de RĂ©paration Line 6 (Francophone)

Good luck with the bugger, sounds like a bonked box.

Depending on how far away you are, you may be able to send it back to another location? Germany has three locations, oop, spain has none =/

Interesting. I am guessing it was a Monday Morning unit as you say. I've used many different units and know a ton of people using them that have never had a problem.

But as I stated, you cannot plug it into a USB hub as that is not advisable straight from Line 6.

I emailed L6 on "[email protected]"
They replied straight away
Good point for L6

I have a few tests to do - typical hotline stuff - to prove I have a prob.

Will keep posting as this progresses

Thanks for all the help along the way

I glad they responded promptly. They usually do. In the early days of the original POD they were very good. In fact better then most. I would compare them to Cakewalk for tech support.

Got my UX1 exchanged by my supplier on 1st Sept. new unit supplied.
Total exchange time - 2 months
Not a great endorsement for a brand new unit but propably on par for most items of this type bought via the internet.
Next time I'll get equipment of this type locally. Might pay a bit more but would probably get a straight out of the box problem exchanged immediately.

Now installing & updating software, etc
Seems to work. Next have to try & remember why I actually wanted to buy it in the first place.....

Well I must say, that is the first Line6 "interface" I've heard going bonkers. Glad you got it fixed, let's hear it :)
