Mixing High School Band

I just recorded the high school band. I had a mic in front of each section ( flutes, french horns, trumpets, percussion, guitar, etc.) I am now going to mix it in pro tools and was wondering if I should use any compression or if I should gate anything. I never recorded anything like this before so any tips would be a great help.

It's a bit late for gating, as far as compression goes, use it if you need it, it totally depends on the levels of each track and and how they are mixing.

I would focus more on the panning aspect to get everything to sit in the right place. Some EQ will be necessary I assume but with the dynamics of an orchestra I would be very minimlaistic with the compression.

I've already done some panning and that made a big difference. I'll try to add a little EQ and see what that does. Thanks for the help.

Yep, just make sure you try to use the EQ to enhance or settle each instrument in the mix.
