some of the scripts have been found to steal cookies. how can one check a script for threats? i really like the google inline mp3 player and the lookitup thing.

I've never heard of this, but I don't like crap that messes with a web site's display...other than font sizes for peeps with vision problems or whatever.

Cookies can be hijacked sometimes, I don't really know the particulars of it, what I do know is that any site I have that uses cookies I encrypt the content of so they are virtually worthless to anyone looking at them. However, browsers are getting a bit more wise about stuff like that.

I am going to install it right now tho.

What will it do that I can't do on my own? In other word, what are the benefits of using it?

there are many scripts. i have only installed two. but i uninstalled them, since i'm unable to check the scripts for mischief. but the two i installed were very popular ones, which makes me think the developer is legit.

lookitup is astoundingly, astoundingly useful and works as it says it does. use highlighting and keystrokes to instantly open a wikipedia or dictionary page on the same page you're viewing, in a small frame thing:
userscripts.org/scripts/show/7715

and this one is an inline mp3 player, which makes mp3s playable direct from the page:
lifehacker.com/391810/goo...ams-linked-mp3s

who knows what else is available, but you can see how this stuff would be very tempting.

neat stuff.....that mp3 player is pretty cool....and the "look it up" for dictionary.com

tempting indeed, but necessary? i'm content with the stock spell checker, i'll look up a word on my own when i need to.

to me, the more you have the more cluttered things would get.

right, but for me, as an editor, some tool like lookitup is absolutely necessary. i actually already have one, though. same sort of thing, but works from within any application, like Word. just highlight and click and i get dictionary.com, wikipedia, synonyms, and more. i use this thing constantly. it even lets you save words to a word list, which ultimately helps you with your vocabulary.

there may be other things i need without yet knowing it. typically, i'll wake up on a given morning and think 'you know what i really need? a...' and then i describe it to myself and go looking for it and it exists.

Ya, I can see were something like that would benefit editors and the like. On the other hand I don't mind the spell checker in Firefox as it is. And google or wiki is just one click away on mine.

Plus I think I can set up the HRC tool bar to do some of that highlighting thing and such.
