Is the point of harbal to eliminate peaks and valleys, or to totally flatten the eq out? I guess my question is, that if it is to get the flattest eq response, why would you not make every song about the same? But if it is just to cut the peaks and valleys, it makes more sense that every song would be different. I am just confused I guess. Thanks

No, you never want to make your spectrum totally flat, that would be nasty...Har-Bal just makes it much more easy to find peaks and valleys and get them in control.

Sometimes they can be hard to nail down with your ears due to the differences in speaks may emphasize them or play them down depending on the strengths and weaknesses of the speakers.

ok, that makes sense, so you are just trying to round off any extreme valleys and peaks, also what is a good level to roll the lows off at, like where does the audible spectrum of bass in music end for the most part?

I pretty much leave the high and low rolloffs alone unless they are extreme (some of my profile music could use a high rolloff), I just use it to drag the midrange peaks and valleys into control.

I think of Harbal as my little buddy who can critique my mix. He's pretty accurate really. I'll use Harbal's intuit eq to see what "he" thinks. I'll look at the places where harbal has changed the eq curve to get an idea of what Harbal thinks is out of line, e.g. 2 to 3 k reduction a little harsh, 500 hz reduction a little muddy, etc. Then I wil A/B between the eq'd and non eq'd mixes and see if I agree. Sometimes Harbal is spot on. Sometimes Harbal and I negotiate a happy medium. Sometimes I really want that harsh sound for whatever reason and I keep my origional mix.

I will say this, as I grow in mixing and obiviously my ears become more trained over time, Harbal and I get closer to agreeing right of the bat every time!

I think because it has the Ball sound to it, cause they are manly. If it was harboob then I'm sure we would think it as feminine.

Captain, I think you're right. I don't know however that I would ask HairBoob to critique much of anything. Not sure of course, just musing.
