Creating a Home Studio

hi there

i currently have a line 6 toneport ux1 and a pc (obviously) and ableton live. so i record all guitars, bass and vox through the gearbox software which comes with the toneport. and i also have an electric roland td3 drum kit which i do the same with.

however, i am fedup of having so many limitations and i want to be able to mic up real amps, real drums and run them through a mixing board then edit them on pro tools and here the results through a pair of monitors

the problem is, i don't know what i need to do this, what else do i need apart from a mixing desk, mics, and software...

if you guys could give me a list of things that i will need for a decent basic set up (item, make and manufacturer) it would be so appreciated

thanks, james

To use pro tools m-powered, you need an M-Audio product, like a audiophile, or FW1814, or delta device.

To use protools LE, you'll need a digidesign product, like mbox, or 002/003.

If you can skip the Pro tools aspect, your options open up.

You can get firewire devices that have preamps built in, and plug right into your PC. No need for mixer. MOTU 8pre, presonus firestudio, or even line6 has a multi input device, as does tascam now.

Or, if you like a mixer, you can get an maudio delta device (PCI) that will receive output from the mixer. You can also use a mixer preamps with a firewire device, like the MOTU traveller, or similar preamp-less device. I use a mixer for preamps, with an ESI ESP1010 with great results.

Sounds like you are ready to step up to a new level, and the interface will be the core of that step.

Start thinking about 1) # of inputs needed, 2) bus archectiture (PCI, FW, USB), and 3) budget.

Those three will steer you into a solid direction.

cheers man, really helpful :D

my mate who owns a basic studio runs pro tools and really want to too. however, he has a massive mixing desk which has about 30 xlr inputs alone on it!

i will need 10 xlr probably to mic drums. so to have pro tools and 10 input mixing desk what do i need

could you give me the make and model of the stuff

thanks again by the way. it is so so appreciated :D

well, for maudio (protools mpowered), you would need at least 10 inputs.

I would say either 2 delta 1010LT, or 2 delta 1010, or 1 FW1814. (there may be others)

All of these 3 solutions will need a bank of preamps, that have at least your 10 inputs, so something like a 18 input mixer (not all inputs will be preamps, some are LINE inputs), should work.

If you're looking to go PRO TOOLS LE, then you're looking at a digidesign 002/003, either rack or desk. THen you'd have to get another preamp bank, like a behringer ADA8000 that outputs lightpipe. This will send 8 signals over lightpipe to the 002/003. Add this to your 002/003's 8 inputs, and you get 16.

The maudio route may run in the 2-3k$ range, where the digidesign route may run into the 3-5k$ range. Microphones will need to be added onto that as well, so figure that into the equation.

Maudio makes a desk too, the I/O something. It's similar to the 002/003. You would need to add an external ADAT preamp for this too, as it's only 8 inputs.

Please remember, I'm only throwing out ideas. These are certainly not the 'end-all' possibilities. Just thoughts that come to my head at the moment. It's up to you to research this, and get familiar with what's available.

heh, seems odd to suggest a 002 with a ADA8000 on the same rig =).

man

this protools stuff is getting too expensive, and i want to run everything through the mixer i.e - mics then into the interface then the comp. can pro tools do that?

is it really that much better than cubase sx3 (as i already own that) or are you just paying for the exclusiveness of the pro tools

if i went down the route of using cubase. how do i connect a mixing desk to my computer?

also, what sort of price is a 10 input mixing desk with phantom power?

is it not possible to use a usb m audio thing instead of a pci interface and then connect a mixing desk?

cheers, james

ProTools is no better than Cubase other than that PT is a hardware and software piece...no better quality sound at all...

Actually, I think the alesis has a Firewire desk, the 26io, or something like that.

here 'tis:

This way cubase would work with it.

That's a pretty good price for 8 mic ins.
