I have a Firestudio Project and was wondering if I would be able to see a notable difference by buying this preamp than the ones already installed in the interface?
i don't want to waste my money and you guys know best.

thanks!

I dunno man, you might hear a difference but I'm not sure it would up the quality in anyway. All this cheapo tube gear is pretty average IMO, they just stick a couple of budget tubes in for marketing hype.

I have this unit going before my delta 44, prior to getting it I used the preamps in a crappy mixer. For 150 bucks, this unit is not bad. Yes you will hear a noticible difference, but for the most part, without cranking the warmth up (which I'm not sure how much of is really tube to be honest), the units pretty transparent and doesn't give much color to the sound. Thats either good or bad depending on what you like.

There are better pres out there, but this one has some bang for the buck.

I haven't used the firestudio project so I can't make an informed comment per how much of an "upgrade" would be appreciated. I do have the 1953 and no it is not a Grace or a UA, but it does do a nice job of filling a tube without adding a lot of additional noise. The adjustment on the tube saturation is a very helpfull tool. It does a nice job of providing the subtle compression of a tube when driven moderately. The meters are really cheep and flaky for sure.
You can listen to it on a song I posted "If I Fell" in my profile. To qualify that a little more the recording was done with an Oktava 319 in a sound booth made from Cubicle walls. In the mix the vox were compressed a bit with the resident Cubase compressor and verb was added with a waves plug.

I owned two of them. When I ran layla which had no pre's they were great. I then purchased an ART mixer and the pre's were loads cleaner. With the pre's on your firestudio I wouldn't bother.
