Im running an Avalon with an MXL v67. You might wonder why im running such a cheap mic with such a nice preamp but the storys too long to explain. Any way id like to know the relationship between the Pre amp and the out put. I am able to turn the preamp up all the way and keep the out put between -4 and 0. I still get a muddy dry sound that i attribute to a garbage mic, but could this have something to do with me over driving the preamp setting. im fairly new with this would like some clairification between the realationship between preamp and out put.

Mar 25, 2008 05:33 am Basically, the signal flow for the 737 goes Preamp - Compressor - EQ - Output. Theres tubes in there, so some of the amplification must be handled by them. By turning up the preamp you are in turn clipping or 'overdriving' the tubes.
Thats the muddy sound, all your transients getting flushed down the toilet. Set your meter to to pre-comp and have it peaking at the 0 mark. The adjust your output so its as high as possible going into your next piece of equipment (MTR, mixer etc.)

Mar 25, 2008 09:31 pm CS has it right. And no worries on the cheap mic thing. I used tons of cheap mics all for the different sound each one has so cheap isn't always bad.
But ya, follow CS's directions and you'll be all good.
Mar 26, 2008 03:32 am With the 737 I'm pretty sure it's the compressor that adds a lot of the muddiness. Not that it's a bad compressor but it adds a lot of color, which either works or doesn't. Try bypassing the compressor and hear what kind of results you get.
Mar 26, 2008 04:19 am Not muddy or too coloured man, just slow n' round IMO.
Mar 26, 2008 10:32 am Color is not a bad thing in my ears. It just works on some things and not others. I buy analogue gear for color. Digital emulation doesn't always work ans sometimes is downright nasty.
Mar 26, 2008 10:33 am depends on what color it is...some are good, some are not.
Mar 28, 2008 12:42 pm Speaking of bad colors, have you ever had one of those ice cream cakes from Dairy Queen? Get one with black (dark purple, really) frosting and tell me your crap isn't a dark greenish/bluish color!
Wait, what were we talking about?
