Here's some Grunge for you.

Its got some issues, but its alright. Its all straight into the TonePort so I never sorted out the sustain issues. I dont think I can be bothered to re-visit this song again now but any advice I could take forward to future recordings would obviously be very helpful

Mar 07, 2008 11:33 am The fills are just bog standard Looped fills from Beta Monkey, lengthened slightly as the song is slower than the original loops. The main beats for the verse and chorus are made from single drums hits, each on a differnt track originally so I could play with the vol and timing etc then mixed into one and looped. The only real difference being open hi hat and harder bass and snare hits in the chorus. The interlude bit is just a loop, I was trying to build my own loop but that sounded similar to what I was going for anyway so I just stuck with it.

Mar 07, 2008 11:34 am I was actually going to spend this afternoon putting some vocals on, or at least experimenting with them a bit but I cant get my mic to work.
Mar 07, 2008 04:54 pm Sounds cool to me. That thing records pretty good and love the Beta monkey Drums - that is what I use too!!

Mar 07, 2008 04:55 pm Thumbs up on that one, and I was wondering about the drums myself. I for one hope to hear what the vocals might do for that. Nice guitar work.

Mar 08, 2008 05:30 am I will have a go at vocals when I get my mic working. I am a rubbish singer though. I've never laid down any vocals that I am happy with - Ever! So I may be some time.

Mar 08, 2008 12:16 pm I have to say, I'm very impressed by the guitar tone (and playing too!). You've hit the 2 things that modellers can do well: clean tones and heavy distorted tones. Are the heavy guitars layered? They came out nice and thick.
Drums sound good too, good use of loops.
I like the arrangement itself as well. The harmonized bridge is cool. I see what you mean by the sustained notes, they do almost die before being struck again. But it sounds good to me, I like the dynamics it provides.
Now get that mic in working order and put some vocals to it! Reference the thread about ReCycle and look at the pic of Ray Charles...if you're trying the mic like that then you've got it backwards :-D
I totally understand about vocals. I'm not a strong singer either. But that hasn't stopped me from making dozens of people around the world wince.

Mar 09, 2008 08:57 am Cheers All,
Tadpui, with the exception of the bridge harmonies there are usually only two guitars (exluding lead) panned approx 40% left and right. The bass is in the centre and has a lot of distortion on it, which beefs the tone up a lot. That was an accident actually. I just forgot to turn the distortion off before putting the bass on but when listening back decided I quite liked it.
Elliot Smith said a lot of writing music is a "Happy Accident" thats certainly true there.
The verse is also just two guitars with occasional lead extras in the 2nd verse.
The bridge is initially just bass with clean chord strummed when the bass note changes and two guitars playing a harmony, a third comes in later playing an octave of the lower part.

Mar 09, 2008 12:44 pm Wow, quoting Elliott Smith...OK you can stay hahaha.
Mar 09, 2008 01:01 pm I love everything about this! Guitar tone and execution are awesome, as noted. I can't wait to hear this with vocals!
Great job!

Mar 09, 2008 05:52 pm I liked the guitar tone as well, sounds like you're getting the UX figured out nicely for sure. Real full and tasty. The playing helps a good deal though I'm sure. I see what your saying about the sustain though. I end up using one of the compressors in there along with something else which I can't remember now for getting that extra long sustain. One thing that helps me though here is being able to set up and play the toneport live through the PR15's with 1000 watts behind em and miccing the room to gather a good bit more sustain out of note like that. Then I mix that in with the direct tone and viola. But my Ibanez does have great sustain as it is so I don't always need that.
The tune itself is pretty tight, nice and heavy. I liked it for sure.
