High Frequency and Mastering

I am a noobie to mastering. I am using Apple Logic Studio on a Apple Mac Pro. After I mastered one of my new songs it sounded really great, but for some reason while listening to it in the car I started feeling sick and my ears started irriating me. I used one of the standard Mastering setting in logic studio called hip hop mix master.

Do I have have a setting two high that it could create a high frequency like described above? The mix sounds really clear so I do not know what I am doing wrong. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

Fatigue, it can happen for sure. The troubled tone should be pretty obvious.

When you're looking for a troublesome frequency, load a parametric EQ and activate one of the bands with a pretty narrow Q. Start sweeping around slowly and you should be able to come across the offending frequencies pretty quickly. Attenuate those frequencies by a few dB (nothing too drastic, work in small increments), mix it back down, and listen to it again.

Parametric EQ is a necessity when it comes to getting a mix sounding balanced. There are a ton of good free EQ VSTs out there, although I'm sure that your mixing software comes with some.

HairBall!!!....or ahhh HarBal!!!!

A great addition to the mastering arsonal. Harbal will point out where in an overall mix or master this problem is residing and assist you in "tuning" those frequencies down to a more pleasing less fatiguing overall mix.

Thanks guy! Appreciate the fast replies and ideas. I am going to give my ears a day rest and then go back and Parametric EQ the mix.

I am still waiting for Harbal to be a Mac AU. We will see.

Thanks,

Steve

Ya I7, my ears must be a lot like yours. I concentrate on clarity in a mix and all too often I end up with the grating, fatiguing, middle high blues once in the car. Either a para-eq or a multiband compresser in the mastering stage can pull those freqs down. HarBal is just really nice as a "second set of ears" as it will suggest places in the mix to change the eq. I use it pretty religiously with the approach of "let's see what Hair-Ball has to say about this one". My little cyber-buddy.

If there is a specific piece of instrumentation you may want to go back to your original project and only edit the EQ on the offending instrument.

You dont want to be taking the high frequency content of everything in the mix when you could simply dull one obtrusive sound.
