ok heres the scoop. i have zero recording experience, ive never recorded anything in my life.
ive been reading some beginner articles on where to get started, and so far this is what ive got.
i downloaded audacity, and krystal recording programs.
for now i just want to record my guitar, i have a line 6 spider 3 and it has a 1/4" recording out on it.
im guessing i could just get a 1/4" to headphone size adapter and plug it into the back of my computer.
am i on the right track? or am i leading myself down to the lions den?

Feb 20, 2008 04:45 pm you're getting warmer =).
sending out from the line 6 will be LINE level, so you'll want to convert from 1/4" over to 1/8" plug on one cable. Plug the 1/8" into your soundcard, and you should be able to 'see' signal in one of those programs.
Once it's plugged in, you'll need to tell your software where to listen to, like on which input. Get this set correctly, and possibly turn on monitoring, and you should see meters jump up and down when you play. Arm the track for writing, if necessary, and press 'Record'.

Feb 20, 2008 04:46 pm You are indeed on the right track. Using the line in on your computers soundcard you could technically start recording with that $5 adapter.
Once you get a better understanding then you can look into getting yourself an interface to get better quality captures with less noise.

Feb 20, 2008 04:51 pm As soon as you can put some money down, I would look to Line 6 or another like company for an Audio interface. I own the TonePort UX2. I love it. I record everything with it. There are other versions to meet most price ranges. Here's a link to the Line 6 options.

Feb 20, 2008 05:17 pm It's USB. It is powered by the USB as well so no need to plug it into the wall.
