General Advice with my set up

As you will have probably gathered, since my last computer died, I am going through a general upgrade of the way I do everything with regards to recording. Basically, I'm trying to leave 2001 behind and get a bit more up to date.

By next weekend I will have a UX2 and should have plenty of loops to get me going from Beta MOnkey, I went for set VII, apparently its 800 rock loops!

I'm really not getting to grips with REAPER, it doesn't seem intuitive and doesn't appear to have the capability off Cool Edit, conversely, I'm having some problems with Cool Edit since "upgrading" from Win '98 to Vista. Namely I cant get cool edit to automatically duplicate a track in the 2nd channel so I can effectivvely record guitar in mono. I have to go into the track editor and convert it to a mono track. Its not a big deal but its a pain in the arse.
Is there anyway I can get the Toneport to do a duplicate stereo output so I can get around this problem? Basically, I've decided I want to stick with Cool Edit so if I cant fix its compatability problems with Vista, I have to try and get around them somehow.

Appart from that, with all the good things I have heard about beta monkey, I'm looking forward to hearing my loops and chopping them up and turning them into a proper drum track!

yeah man i got Double bass mania from beta monkey, you'll love em eh. there's so many loops single hits, separate snares kicks cymbals of all kinds, hats, chinas, etc, etc.
I know what you mean about getting used to a program and then trying to get used to something else.
not sure about how to get around your problem, must be something on that should be off somewhere.
Dunno.
someone here will know though for sure.

What gear did you use for the 2 recordnings I have listened to on this site? What guitars, program, drums etc, basically, I'm really impressed with the quality, while my songs will be a bit different, not that different though, I'd like to achive that sort of quality

used jackson and custom guitars and an average bass through a DI, using cool edit at first.

Recorded the drums(real drums) at a studio onto a mini disk recorder, which is basicly a little portable studio console, much like a VS880 with a hard disk.

Transfered all that to pro tools to finsh the vocals keys and effects.
Followed by the mixing.

Didnt need to do all that it was a necessity at the time.
We needed to transfer the drums in separate track form onto our computer so we used the mini disk and when we did the guitars we simply didnt have pro tools at the time so cool edit was the go.
We used a mesa dual rectifier solo head for axes.
There are 4 guitar tracks on every song playing the same thing. excluding any fills etc.
all up about 20+ tracks for each song.
