further to the thread i started about metalic sounding vocal on cubase, i was wondering if i could run my microphone through a guitar effects pedal.
i have a korg toneworks ax100g,is this pre amped and would it give me the desired effect and power to my vocals and guitar tracks?
i cant really try it till the weekend so id be gratefull for any feedback!

soory,i must add that this would be instead of buying a midi interface to boost the vocal tracks and guitar tracks. and therefore saving money and keeping my soundblaster!
thanks

You could do this, if you want your vocal to sound like an Electric Guitar. Whatever effects you have on are what's going to be recorded- and if you have them bypassed, you'd still be in a pickle.

See, preamp increase the line signal of a microphone, in this case your Dynamic microphone, a certain amount of dB, usually 60. You have to do this because the signal you're sending into it isn't automatically as loud as you hear it in real life. It has to be processed and amplified and then digitally converted (in this case at least) to make it audible in the digital domain. Analog to Digital conversion.

You'd be saving yourself money in the long run by getting a new soundcard that will exceed your needs now, rather than upgrading over and over as your need progress'.

Also, you think you could fill out your profile? It might help us understand a little better what you're dealing with.

it looks like i will have get a midi interface then. i just dont have the money yet.
i have an old midi hifi with a mic input on the amp, maybe i could try running that into my souncard with mic plugged in to see if that works until ive got the money. im willing to try anything at this stage!

Yeah, my suggestion would be to try anything you have, but hold out on buying anything until you can buy something that meets ALL your needs. That way the purchase is worth it. More bang for your buck!

In all honesty, you can do whatever you like to the signal prior to hitting the inputs on the soundblaster and all of that will not make it through the soundblaster into the computer. Game cards have fabulous playback, but there is little quality spent on the inputs of those cards. They are simply not designed with recording in mind. Soundcards/interfaces that are made for recording are engineered to transfer much greater fidelity into the computer as well as out. There are numerous things you can save money on, make yourself etc. and obtain great recordings, but the interface between the output of your analog signal and the input on the digital bus on your computer is not one of them.

Walt summed it up beautifully. I read the rhetoric on Audigys site about the sound card you have being "high fidelity and studio quality" and I've got to say that it's laughable they even attempt to claim that.

Very, very well said Walt.
